Great Gatsby Book Report

The modernist jazz age novel The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was originally published in 1924 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. Since its original publication there have been multiple versions published yet all with the same basic story line. The adaptation chosen was the Amazon kindle edition which was reissued on May 27th, 2003 by Scribner with a total of 193 pages. The Great Gatsby is definitely considered a classic in Literature but can be a little confusing at times because of the time period and the drama between characters. The novel begins in the summer of 1922 with a man named Nick Carraway moving in to a small house in West Egg, New York which is next door to a grand mansion owned by Jay Gatsby and across a bay from his vapid cousin, Daisy Buchanan. Although there are many complications throughout the novel the main conflict is that Mr. Gatsby has gained a vast fortune to win over his old love, Daisy, but his mysterious past and her husband stand in the way. The protagonist is Mr. Gatsby, a wealthy young man who is famous for the lavish parties he throws with the money he made through criminal activities and whose ultimate goal is to win Daisy back. The antagonist is Gatsby’s dream of being with Daisy because this fantasy drove his actions and clouded his judgments which lead him to his death. The novel is written mainly in a first person point of view, although the narrator does change to third person briefly to give more detail to some situations. The plot of The Great Gatsby can be at times extremely hard to follow and make take some reading over to understand it in full depth. The novel begins when Nick is invited over to dinner at the Buchanan’s house where he meets Jordan Baker, the golfer, and learns Tom, Daisy’s husband, has a mistress and Daisy knows. Nick and the golfer, Jordan Baker, end up having a relationship and even though he disapproves of his lack of manners and ethics, Nick becomes friends with Gatsby. Then Gatsby
