However, this success came after lengthening their services beyond their metropolitan area to beyond other states and New York’s greater parts (Dess et al., 2012, p. C126). The year of 2007 the company faced great drawbacks facing unions from employees who demanded better wages, later because of a terrorizing immigration inspection it led to resignations; thus, leaving a small workforce. On the first page of Target’s annual report “A Fresh Approach” is spelt with apples, pineapples, and bananas. Target’s pun on “fresh” symbolizes their fresh thinking approach to the upcoming year, but also their commitment to developing a large selection of quality food products. This is later emphasized on page eight by the introduction of Target’s PFresh line. This new layout features an expanded food assortment of high frequency perishables, bakery items, fresh meats, dairy products, and frozen foods. Target believes PFresh will reinforce to consumers that Target is a one stop shopping destination. Since Target already provides household necessities, clothing, shoes, electronics, and everything else needed for daily life, adding food will further differentiate from competitors who just provide food or household objects. The weakness in this strategy is that Target will have a hard time achieving economies of scale. Economies of scale are cost deductions derived from large sales volume (Contemporary Management, 151). Since Target focuses on many different products, they will not be able to charge less than competitors who only supply food. One way consumers distinguish between companies is through comparing prices, thus Target’s lack of economies of scale may result in consumers shopping elsewhere. Target is trying to counter this is by providing a fun, family orientated shopping experience.…

The primary value of the concept is in the reduction of food wastage. As customers are required to order precisely the amount of groceries that they will require, the issue of wasting the excess in pre-packaged foods is reduced. The supply chain is shortened as products go through a less value adding process. Goods are transported from the farm straight to the packaging and distribution centre, and then straight to the consumer. In order to keep operations as environmentally friendly as possible, the conventional plastic bags will be replaced with cooler bags. Furthermore, scraps will be recycled into compost in order to maximise their potential as resources, and to replenish land upon which crops are grown. Value is created for urban mothers, who control more than 70% of global consumer spending, because they are buying only what they need, there is the convenience of home delivery, and their products are fresh and less processed.…
