Although costume and fashion are too often considered the same, they are two different concepts. Costumes are in history and set as a foundation for revival and contemporary fashion. It expresses the way of life of those living in particular places, time periods, and the social classes, in example the elaborate dresses the Queen wears. The kind of lives that people are expected to live are reflected by the costumes worn. The origin of costumes is usually due to the expectations their society sets and what materials are actually available. Costumes set as a symbol of holidays and festivals, such as Santa Claus during Christmas, the Easter Bunny for Easter, and vampires for Halloween. Revivals in fashion are constantly referring to historical costumes for inspiration through its ideas, designs, textiles, art, etc. Fashion is a contemporary word used to define what is popular by the majority of the public. With interest piqued by the Sophie Gimbel windows at Saks, I stop by 66 Fifth Avenue Tuesday afternoon February 11th, 2013. The garments on display reflect the classic sophistication and timeless elegance of their creator. The day I opened that catalog was the day that my mind went into a world win spiral. So many ideas flooded my brain that I went out and bought my first sketch book to begin on this fashion journey. I started out drawing a pair of straight leg white dress pants, followed by a beautiful silk pink button up blouse. It was simply stunning. To follow this outfit I would dress it up with a pair of pink pumps and a pair of earrings, it keeps it classy but yet remains stylish. It’s what you call business elegant. The outfit screamed “WEAR ME!” I went to school the next day and showed many people my work and they all said that they were in love. They all wanted me to draw to a design for them to. It shocked me how many people actually liked my work, but I was more than happy to do it.…

David Bowie introduced us to Ziggy Stardust, New York introduced us to Iris Apfel. The first and only museum in the world to exhibit the interior designer and eccentric fashion icon is that of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, USA. As the ultimate fashion capital city of the world, it’s no wonder why The Costume Institute was born within the museum to pay homage to the various fashion fortresses, integrating textiles and historical relevance. It’s safe to say that while Iris Apfel inspires individuality and expressionism, along with the exuberance for culture and eclecticism, this too bodes true for the city of New York. The Met recognizes that fashion is an ever evolving, living, breathing form of art, and for this reason I…

I am the perfect candidate for the Fashion Institute of technology because I am inquisitive; I am always craving more knowledge no matter what the topic - I am a leader, I enjoy coming up with fresh, new ideas and I am an intensely passionate person. Though, unlike many other FIT applicants, I haven’t always had a “passion for fashion”. Growing up, I wanted to be an Architectural engineer. It wasn’t until someone close to me gave me my first Michael Kors handbag my 8th grade year that I began to develop the passion I have now. Handling this bag was when realized my obsession with high-end fashion was only beginning. I was amazed at the production work put into making the merchandise. Of course the beauty of fashion is interesting, but what…

This encomium, praising New York Fashion Week is one of the most well known events in the fashion industry. I have chosen fashion week to show my audience of inspiring designers as well as many opinionated “Vogue” readers and everyday people who crave high end fashion. It will show the dedication and hard work a designer much out forth in order to make not just a simple outfit but a mesmerizing and breathe taking design. An inspiring designer should be serious about their work and the industry, ones design can and will go along way when recognized. They will acknowledge the designer in his/her masterpiece and hope to soon have that fame and wealth. I ponder that the audience will admire the success of many unique designs and also fashion week. The audience will look up to the designs knowing that the days weeks, months and maybe years that go by, that one day those will be their designs and creations on the catwalk of New York Fashion Week.…

I worked hard in school to get the grades I needed to attend LIM college to enroll in their Visual Merchandising Bachelors Program with a concentration in Styling. I was then employed at Old Navy and Journeys where I worked as a sales associate to gain a better understanding of the many jobs in the fashion industry. To gain even more experience I created my high school's very first fashion club where we put on a now annual fashion show. I helped host the show and style the models while also handling behind the scenes aspects. I, later on, shadowed local designer, Ms. Evy Woods helping her prepare her fashion show at the Black Congressional Caucus. This event is where I really got to see what a real fashion show entails, which made me fall in love with fashion all over again! As of today I am currently applying for internships and volunteering for New York City fashion week to get even more experience. Eventually, I hope to attend LIM's guest speaking events to hear from people in the industry who have gone through the same process as me. I have done quite a few things to help me gain experience in the industry but I have so much more to…

Death is final. Some die naturally in a peaceful manner while others suffer through tremendous pain in order to get there. Euthanasia is the only way for some people to leave all their pain behind. Euthanasia is the act of killing another person in a merciful way. Of course, euthanasia has many more meaning to it than that. A person that is suffering from a terminal illness decides that life is not worth living because there is too much pain involved and ends his own life, would that be wrong of him? That is the question that is at hand.…

Fashion has always been my favorite source of creative expression. It allows individuals to embrace their creativity in a simple but complex way. It can differentiate people from one another, and also bring them together. Fashion is different all around the world, and I am ready to explore it at The Art Institute of Atlanta. The Art Institute is perfect for me due to location, offerings, and future opportunities. As of my plans for the future, I aspire to be a Fashion Director for a company whose target market are young men and women (such as Forever21, H&M, etc). Although I have a specific career choice, many other components of fashion are intriguing to me also. I would also prefer furthering a creative career in the buying, styling, and production of fashion. I am very open to the different possibilities, and I am very confident that The Art Institute of Atlanta will guide me to make the right decision.…
