Faginata Monologue
FADE IN:
EXT. ISLAND NEAR ASTANA - NIGHT
CHARLIE (21) is an average height with green eyes. She stands staring off into the ocean, detailing her foster dad’s role in her life to no one in particular.
CHARLIE
When I was younger, my uncle used to play a game with me. We would search for hours on end in large open spaces trying to find something out of place. Every time, he’d always win, whether it be a seashell in the grass or a flower pulled up from its roots. Until today, I never understood why he thought it was so important for me to focus on details, and now… it’s all I’m capable of.

INT. LOCAL HOTEL IN KAZAKHSTAN, ASTANA – DAY
It is 1962. Charlie (13) paces around her house with an abundance of thoughts in her head. ROBERT, her

My mom isn’t ever going to come for my birthday, is she?
ROBERT
I’m so sorry Charlie. I hope that she will find her way back to you, but it’s looking like today will not be that day. Besides, it’s for your own good, she wasn’t a very honest woman. Hey, I know what will cheer you up. How about we go to the pizza place I used to take you to?

CHARLIE
You mean Pizza Pepperoni Punk House? That’s been my favorite place since forever! Are any of my friends coming?
ROBERT
Yes, they will be there, but you should at least pretend to be a surprised kid on her thirteenth birthday when we arrive. Do we have a deal?
CHARLIE
A deal? You have my soon to be pizza filled belly as a promise, but Rob I wish you wouldn’t talk about mom like that. I’m never going to give up on her.

EXT. SOMEWHERE OVER THE CASPIAN SEA MOVING - NIGHT
In the middle of the Caspian Sea ANTON, a pilot, takes his new acquaintance Charlie from a local hotel to a deserted island near Astana. The year is 1971.
ANTON
(jokingly)
Man, did we get lucky with this flight. This view is more than I could have asked for, even if I must share it with you, Charlie. Tell me, what would your mother think of you going to a dangerous island like this, all
…show more content…
I have no idea who my own mother is, the only piece of information I have came from my foster dad. Apparently, they worked together some time ago.
ANTON
How come you’re so interested in this?

CHARLIE
When I was younger, my foster dad told me stories about her. I never knew my real father. I need answers, and I intend to get them… one way or another.
ANTON
(with much hesitation)
You know, my father was a bright, but secretive man. He never spoke about my mother, I guess we're one in the same. Sometimes, knowing the truth is worse than speculating.
CHARLIE
Anton, it is more than a speculation. I don’t just want to find my parents; I’ve got to know what happened to them. I deserve that much.
FADE TO:
EXT. TOUCHDOWN ON THE ISLAND - DAWN
Anton and Charlie arrive on the island early in the morning, the breeze pushes them onward towards the ruins of an abandoned prison.
ANTON
(exhausted)
The plane should be stable here till the tide rises at noon, we should leave before sundown, flying in the dark is not something I want to do

This is my cat ‘‘Buttercup’’. You might wonder: Why that name? Well, when I founded him, it was unavoidable to match his muddy yellow coat with the bright flower. He had a mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing and eyes the color of rotting squash. According to my older sister, Katniss, Buttercup was the world’s ugliest cat but it did not matter, because I knew that in the bottom of her heart she was starting to love him. Besides, he was a great help at home, for he was a born mouser. So, we did not have vermin problems anymore. Furthermore, Buttercup was very special for me; he made me feel safe when I had nightmares during the…

First, I must give credit to my dear and elderly grandmother-in-law and her low tolerance to a single glass of wine for my introduction to Jane. During a holiday dinner in 2002, I learned that my newly wedded husband was the father of a boy placed for adoption at birth. Following what I consider a justified emotional outburst to that enlightening news, I became determined to locate this child and his adoptive family. I was about to give birth to my own child, a boy, and now overwhelmed with the idea of robbing my flesh and blood of the opportunity to know the existence of his biological brother. Luckily, there was enough wine left over that evening to offer Grandma her second glass at which time she easily revealed that the mother of my child’s sibling was Jane.…

This is the case for Charlie Kilsworth. Having been raised without a father figure and growing up with a lunatic woman of a mother, Charlie’s life is changed when a letter from Eleanor Hess, Lily’s dear old friend, arrives. Eleanor’s letter answers his biggest life question of who his father is. Eleanor writes in her letter: “My dear Charlie… I know who your father was. Your father was my husband - Karl. Karl Hess. Your name is Hess - if you want it” (476). The words “I know who your father was” show that although she denies knowing his father before in their earlier conversations, she is lying. While reading the letter, Charlie states “I turned the page. My eyes hurt. I was afraid” (476). The words “I was afraid” show how Charlie is affected by this turn of events. Eventually, Charlie accepts his fate and learns about his biological father, Karl Hess, who was a Junior Officer in the Imperial German Army. (477) Time passes and by 1940, Charlie welcomes Alexandra back in to his life and re-marries her (489). By 1944, Alexandra gives birth to a baby girl, whose name is Emma (490). By this time, Charlie gains his confidence and is able to raise a…

Marla: Yes it started out with her being depressed all the time, and then she started drinking, which seemed to make it worst. I had to take care of myself and my younger siblings. My mother would drink every day, and all night, then she would fall asleep. The school called authorities because we never went to school, which resulted in protection services taking us out the home, and we were separated. I have no idea where my siblings are. Phoebe always gave the nurses that visited me a terrific time, which ended up having the nurses take care of me like i was the president. She left her latest story on my bedside table. Hazel Weatherfield got shot in the leg, but still somehow managed to fend off a mob of gangsters with an empty revolver. Of course, I found that impossible. My mother eventually to see me, along with the Phoebe and D.B. We had a long talk, and I don't feel much like talking about it. I remember she started crying at one point. I got up and gave her a hug. D.B. and Phoebe joined in quick. It was the least phony thing you could imagine. I told her that everything would be fine, and that we were all here, Allie too. That made her smile. She looked me in the eyes then kissed me on the cheek. She was still crying, but I swear they were tears of joy. What troubled me though was that Dad wasn't there. He's never there for these rare moments. That worried me a little bit. I felt like I should have worried about it, or at least pretended to worry about it, but I didn’'t. Come to think of it, Dad is hardly on my mind nowadays. He's on my mind even less that he used to be when we were normally together, and that was pretty low. Don't ask me why, because I can't explain…
