In the book, Ethnic Studies: Issues and Approaches, Philip Q. Yang describes how ethnic studies allowed students to “study ethnic groups and their interrelations through the combination and integration of perspectives of various disciplines, including anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and humanities” (Yang 8). Ethnic studies introduced a new way of knowledge by allowing students to explore new ideas through non traditional learning. Ethnic studies also allowed for minority groups to be represented through their history in the United…
"Ethnic Notions" is a historical film that takes the viewer through the entire course of American history from the 1820s to the 1980s. The songs, watching the films and seeing all the artifacts is what makes this film such a powerful tool. The film describes some of the terms that were used to depict black Americans. Well into the twentieth century the "Mammy", the "Coon", and the ""Sambo"" were all terms used in reference to black Americans. In 1941 the cartoon was made and made its way into many of the homes of American culture.…
It’s been over a decade since Nikki Giovanni wrote “Campus Racism 101,” but sadly the issues have not dissipated with time. In fact, these issues have evolved into something that affects all social groups; not just minority groups. While racism as a whole is still thriving, it has recently been accompanied by stereotypically induced prejudice; stereotypes are persistent in every social group. From stereotyped communities to minorities in collage and the campus itself, to hate crimes and television’s advertisement of stereotypes, it is obvious that Nikki Giovanni’s arguments are still very much valid and most importantly, ignored.…
The most important change attributed to the Strike was the establishment of the College of Ethnic Studies in the San Francisco State College, an important legacy followed by many other higher education institutions across the country. The existence of a College of Ethnic Studies gave life to previously unexamined ethnic minorities’ experiences that are now greatly incorporated on campuses throughout the U.S. Student communities became more racially diverse, even though most faculties are still White. An unintended consequence of the Strike was also the…
In a school that has a proud tradition of scholarly excellence, having produced some of the country’s great thinkers and leaders, I put it to you that we are courageous enough, proud enough and confident enough to engage in such conversations and be prepared to examine what it looks like and feels like to be in the ethnic minority and be a member of our community.…
I believe that, for people to get along, the students need to be aware of their own backgrounds as well as backgrounds of their peers. Reading, They’ve got to be carefully taught, by Susan Brady Konig, has changed my view. I agree with her claim that too much emphasis on cultural diversity may actually divide people of different ethnicities and cultures rather than bring them together.…
Ethnic Notions is a documentary that has really opened my eyes. The documentary shows to the viewer the attitudes and relations between “white” Americans and African Americans in the 1940’s. The display of the historical accounts of how African Americans were portrayed in media is still shocking even after all this time. The amount of propaganda and hatred that fueled the exploitation was ridiculous. A large number of “white” Americans today still show a complete lack of respect toward the African American culture as a whole. The documentary portrayed how various cultural characteristics have been used in the past abusively in different theatrical ways, i.e. cartoons for children, books for children, journal, magazines, posters, films, etc. Throughout the film many inappropriate and uncomplimentary words were used to label African Americans as being uneducated, unmotivated, lazy and uncivilized human beings. In the 1940’s the dominant social group, being the “white” Americans began brainwashing people with hatred towards African Americans through the various strands of propaganda. To substantiate the “white” Americans prejudices, they would try to convince others in the way of how an African American male or female looked by exaggerating their facial features, skin color, no educational accomplishment and the way they acted by putting attention on their low social and economic standings. Marlon Riggs, the director of this documentary shows us children’s books for educational purposes in which African Americans are called ‘niggers,’ as if that is exactly how we are to address them. One children’s book was brought to our attention in the film, “Seven Little Niggers,” the content and illustrations were not only cruel but for a children’s book, they were appalling. The documentary demonstrates that throughout cartoons in the 1940’s and so would have very stereotypical names for those in the cartoons, i.e. Mammy, Auntie, Uncle, boy, girl,…

The cultural difference between us made it hard for other students to understand what we were during. Students of color would be upset with me for talking with the white students and the white students would also be upset with them for associating with me. Just like half-century ago black people had problems when the right to vote in the South was the almost exclusive domain of white people (Kornacki, 2011). Black people would be intimidated by white people if…
I was born into a mixed family much like Tiger's. My mother's father was Chinese-American, orphaned by his birth-family and raised in the South. My mother's mother was African-American and, following the family legacy, she received a degree from Fisk University in Nashville, TN. My relatives were instrumental in the foundation of the Avery Normal Institute in Charleston, SC, an educational institute for African-Americans founded in 1865 (now associated with the College of Charleston). My mother grew up in a segregated society where choices were rarely available. She received her Master's degree in Library Science from HBC University. My father's family is of German/Scottish/Irish/Danish decent. When faced with racial classification forms, I often check every box that is representative of my family history and the home in which I was raised - Black/African-American, Asian-American and Caucasian. Selecting only one box would be denying my family's ethnic mix.…
In many ways ethnic boundary markets and the categorization of race can be seen as a very similar to one another. On page 158 of the text we are presented with the definition of ethnic boundary markers, is an attempt to signify who is in a particular group and who isn’t. These may include a collective name, shared cultural practices such as food, clothing, and architecture; a belief in a common ancestors; association with a particular territory; a shared language or religion; and an imagination of shared physical characteristics. These ethnic boundaries are not clearly defined and can change just a frequently as they are made up. The movement of groups of people through marriage, migration and adoption all contract this set notion of ethnic…
As students, it naturally becomes easy to just completely absorb ourselves in classes, work, and other school activities that we are involved in forgetting that there is much more to our college experience than that. Problems are happening right around us even more specifically on our campus and as community members who see there is need for a change, it is up to us to build a new model. In A good Time for the Truth editor, Sun Yung Shin states, “A society that systematically suppresses the stories and wisdom of certain groups cannot make the best decisions for a shared future. We need a future in this state that leaves no one out. We are interconnected, we are interdependent” (Shin 7). The first step in working towards this is realizing that everyone is a human being that should be treated like one regardless or their background. There is no way we can move towards future goals of unity by acting upon how we feel or act towards a certain group of…
Since its birth, Pakistan has been home to various multi-ethnic societies and groups in all its provinces. The activities of these groups have had varying impact on the political history of Pakistan. This paper analyses the impact of the Sindhi ethnic society (also known as the "Jeeya Sindh movement") on the political history of Pakistan during the 1970s. I then provide a critique of the government's response to the demands of these movements and then suggest my opinion as to how the government should have reacted so as to have a better outcome.…
