This entry will discuss the attendance of the DNP student at the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing, Lambda Chi Chapter conference on February 8, 2017. The DNP student attended this from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. The theme this year for this conference was “Nursing: A Catalyst for Global Healthcare Re-Structuring through Advocacy, Policy, Philanthropy and Life-Long Learning”. DNP essential five: Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care is related to how healthcare providers have a role in advocacy and policy. Advocacy should start in the local communities then globally. Advocacy also entails fighting for the rights of one’s profession. Nursing needs more leaders who will advocate for the profession. The DNP student had the opportunity to attend Jhonii P. Louis, PhD, RN LCSW session. This individual went to Haiti to conduct his research project. Many individuals may think everyone has access to resources for disease prevention. If individuals were educated from their home country on the importance of health maintenance, they would keep the same regimen for when they migrate to a different country such as the United States. There are places in third-world countries where there is a lack of technology and/or resources to provide simple screening for the population. Healthcare globalization will always be an issue. Many illnesses can be avoided through primary prevention. Educating patients in the language and grade-level which they comprehend is a major step to disease prevention. Secondary prevention, which includes screening, is extremely beneficiary to identify and treat certain diseases before it becomes detrimental.
