India and the United States of America are two of the world’s largest and prominent democracies. In the past few decades, they have conquered a significant progress in development and globalization. The geographical setting of the two countries is no more a barrier and the credit goes to the perpetually evolving technology which has abridged the factor of distance greatly, turning the world into a global village and drawing all the cultures into a homogeneous viewpoint. India and United states share few similarities and also equally notable dissimilarities in terms of Religion, Politics, Social behaviour and Economic conditions. These similarities and dissimilarities are outcomes of the different life styles embraced by the inhabitants, from the medieval times. They are discussed extensively in the paragraphs below.…

Texas, like most other states, has functioned under a series of Constitutions, each of which has contributed to the state's constitutional legacy. Each is appropriately understood from the perspective of the period in which it was adopted. The current Constitution was written in 1876 after the termination of Reconstruction policies. Because reconstruction policies were oppressive, the Constitution was designed to put strong restraints on government to guard against future abuses of power. Today, the document is so restrictive that many believe it is counterproductive. However, a rewrite of the Constitution has been elusive, due to special interests and others who believe that they benefit from the current system.…

Oral communication fulfills a number of general and discipline-specific pedagogical functions. Learning to speak is an important goal in itself, for it equips students with a set of skills they can use for the rest of their lives. Speaking is the mode of communication most often used to express opinions, make arguments, offer explanations, transmit information, and make impressions upon others. Students need to speak well in their personal lives, future workplaces, social interactions, and political endeavors. They will have meetings to attend, presentations to make, discussions and arguments to participate in, and groups to work with. If basic instruction and opportunities to practice speaking are available, students position themselves to accomplish a wide range of goals and be useful members of their communities. (http://www.com.uri.edu/comfund/cxc.shtml) This paper describes the applications of the task-based approach to teach oral communication skills in an academic setting. A course ‘Oral Communication Skills’ is taught to the students of Engineering and Technology at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad to make them proficient in oral skills. The present study tries to explore the possibility and feasibility of task-based approach to apply for the teaching of oral communication. Key Words: Oral Communication, Task-based approach, dimensions of oral communication, academic setting.…
