SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2013

Welcome to La Quinta High School and Honors World History! The Social Studies department at LQHS has a very tightly articulated vertical program that begins with this course. The skills we learn in this course will be the foundation for your IB Social Studies work throughout your years at La Quinta. We are looking forward to having you in our program and having you begin your journey with us in IB History!

The following assignments are not optional. These are required assignments and will comprise your first grade in the class. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. Please keep in mind that this is an advanced level sophomore course. The summer assignment is the first grade you will receive for the course and is worth a very substantial 300 points; if you do not perform well, it will impact your grade for the entire first semester. The summer assignment is valuable in that the content of the work builds the foundations for our coursework. Your performance on this assignment is indicative of your ability to handle the rigor of the class, so please take it seriously and come prepared. As IB states repeatedly, “The proof is in the performance.”

You must obtain a copy of the following textbook: Essential World History, (Henry Brun, ISBN 1-56765-636-6 for the paperback). It is, as of this writing, available through the publisher, AMSCO Publications, for $18.50 (plus tax and shipping) in the paperback form or for $23.50 (plus tax and shipping) in the hardback form. You may also be able to buy used copies through Amazon or any one of the other book resellers. Avoid any backorder challenges and poor summer assignment scores by ordering the book before July 1st.
