From the moment Columbus was greeted by the natives, he immediately lost all respect towards them. Their nude bodies were defined as a lack of knowledge, skill, and religion (DeWitt). Columbus wanted to spread the word of Christianity among the Native Americans and at the same time he saw a source of easy profit by enslaving the Indians. Not once did it come to Columbus mind that these lands were not his to take but rather began to rename these islands when he sailed back home he had the entitlement of being “the founder”. During his first voyage, Columbus did not do anything incriminating against the Native Americans because he simply analyzed their culture. When he sailed back to Spain, he returned with many new items as well with kidnapped…
To begin with, Christopher Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas. He called the island San Salvador; but “the Indians called it Guanahani.”(Columbus pg 1) Columbus explored the Caribbean; mainly the islands of Juana. Columbus returned back in Spain and wrote a letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella telling them about his discoveries. While discovering the islands, Columbus gave his impression of the islands and he described the different natural…
Cristopher Columbus was probably one of the greatest explorers of all time. His accomplishments are extra ordinary. Everyone knows that he came to find The New World, but theres much much more that he's done than that.…
Columbus’s letter to the king and queen of Spain was full of discourse regarding how, what he thought was India, would benefit the country economically. He crafted the letter to make sure that the rulers of Spain would see the many benefits of continuing the conquest of the Americas. For example, he stated that “It has many ports along the sea- coast” and the land possessed “ many spices, and vast mines of gold and other metals”. By stating these things he is setting a scene for the future that if Spain continues to conquest these lands adn to finance more exploration it will benefit financially without having to assert much effort. The spices and gold would be exported and could be shipped to Spain easily through the many seaports he describes and inevitably help Spain economically.…
Mr. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) navigator Spain famous and pioneering major geographical discoveries in human history. He was in his youth believer in the theory of spherical Earth and not leading the famous Marco Polo every respect and appreciation, and the determination to become a navigator. Christopher Columbus was on his fourth voyage and he was looking for a way to China. That’s when he came across the country named Panama, which stretches only 60 miles, where he found Indians who had tons of gold. But he was looking for a way to China so he sent his brother Bartholomew to search for more gold. At first Indians were willing to lead the Spaniards to the gold, but eventually they got tired and led the Spanish back to the coast. When the Indians did this they were abused. Eventually the Indians fought back and drove of the Spanish.…
He states in his letter that it has “Fertile land”(1) so this would help the queen and king if they were to conquer it as they could grow large amounts of crops. Columbus also commented on the Lay of the land and the variety of the plants that it had to show. Such as when he said “They are full of trees of great variety, which brush at the stars”(1) Which talks about the height of the trees and the amount of the trees that reside on the island. The lay of the land that he talks about is the mountains and rivers that the island has to offer which comes at a variety as well considering he said “ Very lofty mountains” and “Wholesome rivers flow” (1) having these things would also help him incase of a combat situation because it provided coverage in many situations. Throughout the island he find many sights that he found fascinating and also reliable for…
Columbus was only doing what any other person under the ruling of a king and queen would have done back then, to serve and please them in any way possible. He wanted to show himself to his king in queen. Christopher of course is known for discovering America, but on the way there he did things that are frowned upon now. On his discovering he made the Natives into slaves, forced them to as he please or they would get punished. Columbus should not be bashed upon for his prejudices and brutality, back then it was all around the world and everybody was doing it, it wasn’t a wrong thing at this time.…
“Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492...” This popular poem has become engraved in the minds of many children for years. From a young age, certain facts about the discovery of America are taught. What is not being realized is that many specifics are being omitted from lessons. This being said, it is important to note that it is no longer as simple to just explain that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Even in many history textbooks throughout modern America, some of the truths are absent. Columbus has recently become so controversial, especially at the time of his quincentennial, because of this oblivious ignorance of the facts of history. Many believe…
When Columbus was writing his journal, he made it very clear that he wanted to control all of the islands he discovered, and that all of the wealth he gained would be passed down in his own family. " ...still I determined to pass none of these islands without taking possession, because being once taken, it would answer for all times." (Last page of Columbus Journal). After Columbus meets the Native Americans, he comments on how easy he…
Europe was a continent emerging from the darkness of the Middle Ages. The people had endured a long period of war, disease, and general strife. Europe was emerging from the Middle Ages with a new sense of confidence and self-worth. Europe’s achievements, however, led to ever increasing confidence. Christopher Columbus’s “The Journal of Christopher Columbus” documents his actions taken in the Americas as well as insight into his thoughts at the time. When Christopher Columbus came into contact with the Native Americans, he would unknowingly perpetuate a European attitude of superiority. Even out of kindness, Christopher Columbus believed that the Native Americans were like…
Columbus treated the Native Americans intolerably when he arrived to the New World. Upon arrival, his plan was for him and his crew to exasperate, ravage, kill, mangle, and destroy the Natives, as well as acquire gold from their king (Document 7). He and his crew committed harrowing crimes against the Indians that were irreversible and deadly. He forcefully made Natives strip mountains top to bottom, split rocks, move stones, and carry dirt to the rivers to be panned out for gold; this put great pain into the Natives lives. Also, Columbus ordered for the Natives to carry him and his…
