Class Expectations As summer soon came to an end, I started to panic a bit about all of my classes I will soon be faced with. As I heard story after story from my brother and his friends about their experiences in junior year, I soon came to the conclusion that junior year is a huge step up in difficulty from sophomore year. So when the first day of school came around all of my fears went away. I met my theology teacher, and to my surprise he was not at all what I expected, rather than teaching me in a rote manner he has engaged me in a unique way by using videos and examples. I expected this class, theology, to be one of my more time consuming and boring classes just as it has been in the past. I expected to walk in everyday to class and just sit there reading the textbook the whole time, or listen while being lectured by the teacher on God and how the sacraments have an impact on our lives. Surprisingly I was completely wrong, he decided to teach us what he liked to called “sexy theology”. In sexy theology he was turning us to God in a very unique way by teaching us moral lessons in an abstract way causing us to think outside of our normal spectrums. One of my favorite things this class has to offer is that rather than doing the normal individual, tedious work we are aloud to choose how we get taught. I believe I will cope with ethics just fine. Actually, I am interested to learn about the moral lessons and principles I should follow to stay true to God. Also, I hope that during some of our discussion we are aloud to express our own opinions on the topics. By the end of this course I hope to become a better person and to be able to apply my spiritual beliefs to my everyday life. For my teacher, of course, I expect him to teach us all the material we need to know about ethics to move on to the next level in senior year. Also, I expect for him to prepare us for our finals and midterms properly. One thing I do hope that continues in the class is the way we are being taught. From all the different ways I have been taught, the way you, Mr. Lawson, teach is probably one of my favorite teaching styles. There is always something different happening each day. From youtube videos to looking at pictures and trying to depict their meaning, it captures my attention and makes me more focused in class. One suggestion I do have for the class is the ability for one day out of every two weeks to vote on a topic happening in the world and to discuss it in class. I got this idea from my old theology teacher where we sat down at the end of each week and talked about a worldly concern as a group. Some of the topic I would like to cover would be world poverty, war, and the church’s views on gay marriage. Overall, I feel like my expectations for this class will be met wholly.

    In the article, “Students Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes,” Max Roosevelt uses six separate interviews to illustrate the fact that students need to go above and beyond what is considered “average” to receive an A. Students have the belief that if they do what they are supposed to and meet the standard requirements they should get an A, when in truth that is just simply what you are supposed to be doing in the first place. To receive outstanding academic achievement, students go to school not just to learn, but to give opinionated feed back, be interactive, and put high amounts of time and dedication into their studies. Roosevelt proclaims that a sense of entitlement to A’s and B’s may come from their prior experience from kindergarten to twelfth grade, a school system where “doing the work” implies high grades. Sarah Kinn, a junior English major at University of Vermont agrees with the majority of students, claiming “[Students] feel that if [they] do all of the readings and attend class regularly that [they] should be able to achieve a grade that of at least a B.” Students think that if they work hard, they deserve a high grade. In contrast, professor Marshall Grossman does not give an A for meeting the minimal requirements; he gives a standard C. Professor Greenberger assumes that giving an easy A can lead to a heightened sense of entitlement, which is be directly related to the increase of achievement anxiety. The fear of failure, pressure, and competition that one faces could play an effective role towards their belief of deserving good grades. Another example would be how Dean Hogge puts an emphasis on the locus of control. There needs to be a desire to earn an A rather than just easily receiving an A. The student’s dilemma is that they tend to put the responsibility on someone else if they receive a low grade, which leads to irresponsibility and does not prepare you for the real world.
