As a military necessity, President Abraham Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation to free 3.5 of the 4 million slaves in the states that rebelled against the Union. The Proclamation also allowed black men to join the Union Army and Navy to fight in the Civil War. While expressing his vision to free slaves, President Lincoln openly solicited the feedback and opinions of the American people regarding slavery. However, prior to his presidency, Lincoln made it known that he was against slavery but did nothing to address it and instead supported colonization of slaves. Abraham Lincoln is most always associated with the Civil War. But, he was not elected through a majority of the popular vote. In fact, with only forty percent of the popular vote, he wasn 't even close to a majority. His Republican platform reached out to many groups, but left out the South. Many southerners thought he was an abolitionist, although he did favor monetary compensation and a Union. As a result of southern fears over Lincoln, he was not allowed on the ballot in ten southern states, and many states threatened to secede if he was elected. His election prompted the first state, South Carolina, to secede from the Union, and started the Civil War. This contributed to the growing rift greatly, in that the South not only felt their livelihoods were being threatened through the potential loss of their slaves, but also had a sense of disenfranchisement at the polls, because the minority candidate won. But, even though if Lincoln had not been elected, the Civil War would have been delayed, Lincoln was really just the straw that broke the camel 's back. The south was looking for an excuse to secede, and Lincoln gave it too him, which makes this election a relatively minor event in contributing to the civil war.…

The war to preserve the Union eventually became a war to end slavery. The Civil War had revolutionary effects on the society of America. The most important of these effects was the abolishment of slavery, the key establishment of society in the South. The emancipation of 4 million slaves in America was far greater than any other emancipation of slaves in the world in every aspect. At the beginning of the war, Lincoln made it known that the North's cause was for free labor. However, Lincoln also stated that the war was not being fought to end slavery, but to preserve the Union. Lincoln wanted to keep the border slave states of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri in the Union and create the broadest base of support possible for the war…

The secession of the southern states proved to the world that democracy was a failure and that it didn't work. Angered by this fact the Union was determined to show that it did work. So they all fought hard to beat the South and bring them back from this so that they could stand together as a unified country. Lincoln, being the president and completely against the idea of slavery, needed people in the north to think that it was wrong too, made speeches that spoke of how wrong slavery was. An example of a speech that Lincoln said that did this was in the Gettysburg Address. During the battle, many lives were lost so, but the Union finally had a victory, after Lincoln made a speech, in the speech he talked about the idea that all men are created equal, taking the thought from the founding fathers. He said how he thought that this statement was true. People who listened started to think about this then believed it too and thought how slaves are equal too and should be free. Even though his speech was only 2 minutes long and 272 words it touched people hearts and made the nation stronger, and made people think of how wrong slavery…

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America, was the man who rose to the presidency and took the steps needed to end the situation of separation by making sure the South didn't secede from the Union and continue to be a slave-owning population. An emancipator frees people from bondage or oppression, Lincoln's main priority in his term in office was to re-unite the North and South, not to free the slaves. He believed that white people were superior to African-Americans and he was 'playing politics,' in the sense that he wanted to please the majority of the population, not the slaves he was freeing. President Lincoln did sign the Emancipation Proclamation, but that didn't make him "the Great Emancipator." In the end, the South was defeated, slavery was dissolved, and the United States of America lived, but President Abraham Lincoln was inaccurately labelled as the hero.…
