Chernicky Research Paper
A popular quote from the movie Birdman reads, “ a man becomes an informer when he cannot be a soldier.” The same concept goes for my interviewee, Richard, or as he prefers, Rick, Chernicky. Rick is an aspiring journalist and former soldier who hails from the heart of the PA snow belt region, otherwise known as Edinboro, PA. In his free time, Rick enjoys the outdoors, art, exercise and watching more abstract movies such as the one quoted above: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). When James Haliday (creator of the OASIS) passed away six years ago, in his will was a video. That video explained that before he died, Haliday inserted “easter eggs” into his most popular game. He programmed in three different keys to three different gates. The first player to open the last gate wins Haliday’s fortune of over 240 billion US dollars. Haliday gave gunters, people who tried to win the contest, a hint in the form of a riddle. This riddle led them to one of the keys which then had another riddle, this was how pleople were supposed to find all the keys and gates. The Sixers are the yin and the gunters are the yang. The Sixers are a multimillion dollar company with experts who are trying to win the prize. This is considered unfair to the gunters, who are by themselves and think the Sixers ruin the spirit of the contest. This scavenger hunt all inside the OASIS has been going on for six years. Growing up was as idyllic as one would suspect. In my pre-pubescent years we moved several times bouncing from Oregon to Washington in search of “gods’ plan” for us, finally starting a church of our own in Lubbock, Texas. The church siphoned our time and money to the brink of poverty. Through the eyes of a jaded 5-year-old, everything was but a perfect utopia, neither a problem nor a care in the world. Mother was a stay at home at the wife, dictated by the church, whilst father worked odd jobs donating what blood and platelets he could muster that week to pay…
