Art was created to express ones emotion, ideas, and creativity to the world. Therefore, censoring the art project is also censoring the artist. Censoring the artist is violating their right of freedom of speech. Thomas Jefferson once said "I am opposed to any form of tyranny over the mind of man". Therefore, America was founded on the idea that the people would be free from any sort of government tranny. Not being able to have freedom of speech was the most basic form of abuse that the Founding Fathers thought. So, they fought to establish freedom of speech and thus, the Bill of Rights was created and a part of it is the First Amendment. Heretofore, the government has been enforcing censorship on things that it believes could be harmful to society. As American citizens, we have the right to express ourselves as stated in the First Amendment that states that the clause prohibits the government banning speech because they do not agree with the message. Therefore, any act that prohibits the media or individuals from getting information out violates their rights.
However, there are many things that individuals should not see; this includes pornography and racist remarks which can encourage Americans to act in rebellious ways. Yet, the government should not censor these materials. But, there is a way to get rid of these vulgar materials without censoring and keeping the art project appropriate. By communicating with the artist, the government and artist can work out an agreement. The government may communicate with the artist what they would like to see and not see on the art project. As a result, of this agreement the artist doesn’t have to sign a censorship clause and the art project is free of any vulgar items.
In the end, having the censorship clause violates the First Amendment that our Founding Fathers worked so hard to establish. Additionally, problems can be worked out by talking it out and not placing a clause to do something and if you don’t you don’t get the grant.
