In 1980, the Pennsylvania Lottery Scandal, colloquially known as the Triple Six Fix, was formed. It was a plot to rig the Daily Number, a three digit game the Pennsylvania Lottery offers. All of the balls except 4 and 6 were weighted, meaning that the drawing was almost sure to be a combination of only 4s and 6s. The scheme was successful in that 666, an expected result, were drawn on April 24, 1980; however, the unusual betting patterns alerted authorities to the matter. The chief conspirators were sent to prison, and most of the fraudulently acquired winnings were never paid out. The plan was masterminded by Nick Perry (1916–2003), the announcer of the Daily Number.…

During the Spring 2013 semester, I was granted the opportunity to intern at Denton County Juvenile Probation. This institution is responsible for delinquent juveniles that have committed a criminal act. The institution consists of several departments: intake, the court, detention, the POST adjudication program, and JJAEP (Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program). My intern experience consisted of working with juveniles placed in the Courage to Change (CTC) POST adjudication, which is a diversion program of the Texas Juvenile Detention Department (TJJD). However, while interning, I was able to experience the many facets of the juvenile justice system, from the juveniles’ entry into Denton County Juvenile Detention Center, all the way to their release from the Courage to Change program and their re-entry back into society. For the majority of my time as an intern, I worked under the caseworkers in the CTC program, which managed the majority of casework load for each juvenile that was sentenced to the program. The daily activities that I performed while interning included: filing of room checks, group work, and case file information, while also helping the caseworkers fulfill any code greens (memos to the caseworkers from the residents for needed materials or to notify them of any information).…

When working with foster children, migrant children, abandoned and homeless children there are many strategies that need to be applied to each individual child case by case. Each of these groups of children may face different challenges and some of the same challenges. Higher rates in these groups of children may fall behind in academics because some do not even speak English. Abandoned and homeless children are disadvantaged because they are of low social economic standings financially they are living in poverty and may not have adequate means or an environment that allows them to feel safe comfortable or even a place to sleep at night which will affect their performance and ability to even attend school. There are civil laws and laws within the NCLB Act known as the McKinney Vento Homeless Education Act that do not allow for schools to discriminate against homeless children, or segregate them they are entitled to be in the mainstream school environment. These are some of the differences that separate the typical students from the non typical students. Regardless of diversities these groups of children can be taught and provided the means of education so that they can reach their potentials.…
