Act 1 Scene 1

1. In which town is the play set? In what country do you suppose this town exists?
It was set in Verona, Italy.

2. In the prologue, Shakespeare tells us that our two title characters are going to kill themselves. His 1600’s audience would’ve already known the story of Romeo and Juliet from a famous poem of the time, so this information would not have ruined the experience. In fact, many scholars say that knowing the deaths are coming actually improves the play. How could this be? Explain your thoughts.
I think it improves the play because you are prepared for what is happening next and you won’t get mad because it came out of surprise.

3. When Sampson says he will not “carry coals,” what does he mean? What literary technique is being used in this silly exchange between Sampson and Gregory?
I think Sampson means he will not hear this nonsense. An oxymoron.

4. Complete this sentence: In Shakespearean times, biting your thumb was…
An insult.

5. Is Benvolio a Montague or a Capulet?
Benvolio is a Montague.

6. Why doesn’t Lady Capulet want her husband to get involved in the fight?
He is old so he can’t fight.
7. How many times have the Capulets and Montagues had street fights recently?
They have had 3 street fights recently.

8. How has Romeo been spending his days recently?
He closes the blinds and makes it dark and gets frustrated.

9. List three of the oxymorons Romeo uses to describe the conflict between his family and the Capulets. Then, explain how the family feud is oxymoronic in its nature.

10. In your own words, rewrite Romeo’s speech about love in Scene 1, lines 176-180, line by line. He talks about Rosaline and how she doesn’t like him back.

12. Romeo is heartsick over a girl (it’s not Juliet) who is not at all interested in Romeo. Name three of the ineffective romantic strategies Romeo has used to woo this girl.
She won’t buy all the romantic stuff he says. Won’t be interested in a lot of gold. She won’t accept the flowers he gives her.

13. Why doesn’t this girl like Romeo?
She will ignore anyone who tries to hit on her.

14. What does Benvolio tell Romeo to do in order to forget the girl who doesn’t want him?
He tells Romeo to look at other girls because there are going to be prettier girls than Rosaline.

Lady Capulet tries to convince Juliet that Paris is the perfect man for her by magnifying him to persuade Juliet round to the idea. Lady Capulet expects marriage to be an easy thing to consider and agree to; this means her expectations of Juliet are to take the hand of whomever Capulet & Lady Capulet think is the perfect man and not of whom Juliet thinks is best. Lady Caplet has shown she has taken up her role in the Patriarchal Hegemony that surrounds Veronese society and she and all women have not made any effort to change it, but instead have absorbed and continued through with the tradition without any question of if it is right or fair to women. Lady Capulet is typical of women of the time as her marriage to Capulet is portrayed to be one of power , money and status rather than of love.…

Romeo and Juliet is a ageless work of art that still captivates and cultivates people and audiences all around the world 416 years after it was originally written by William Shakespeare. It was perhaps one if not the most renowned play he had ever the fortune and pure creative brilliance of writing. It is a play of avid romance and terrible tragedy in which two young lovers are deprived of what they want most in life... each other. So, they did like any other rational pair of young adults would do; they killed themselves. But who is to blame for their passionate demise? There are several people who would seem most likely, but in the end, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves. They physically took their own lives, of…

In the very opening of the play the chorus is singing about Romeo and Juliet, and predicts their life together as having a star-crossed conclusion. By already knowing from the beginning that their life has an ill-fated conclusion, we can see how their choices brought them to their death. Romeo and Juliet could see that their life together was not going the way they wanted, because Romeo and Juliet wanted to marry each other but there were many barriers between them. Both Romeo and Juliet had many failed attempts in their efforts to trick fate out of what was ultimately going to happen to them both. Hold! Get you gone, be strong and prosperous in this resolve. I’ll send a friar with speed to Mantua, with my letters to thy lord. (IV, i, 122-124)…

In the beginning of the play Romeo appears to be somewhat pretentious. He speaks dramatically of his "love" for Rosaline which, in fact, is probably not love at all. He speaks in rhyming couplets which makes his words sound insincere and rehearsed. He over dramatises the situation while talking to Benvolio (his cousin) which suggests that he is seeking sympathy or attention - such actions make him seem immature in comparison to the rational thinking characters in the play such as Paris.…

    Othello Act 1

    • 728 Words
    • 3 Pages

Iago, of the epic "Othello", is a very cultured and competent villain; so much that one could say Iago is the most fearsome villain in all of Shakespeare. Iago has no remorse or sympathy for his actions or the consequences they entail. Othello, the Moor which Iago's crosshairs have set aim on, is a veteran of the Venetian Cyprus Wars as well as other battlefields which have given him unparalleled credit as a soldier. Othello has promoted Cassio to a position that Iago saught after; in spite of Iago's war experience and recommendations, Othello had already came to a decision. Iago begins to ferment in vengeance. As his need for revenge grows, his threshold for motive decreases. A self-centered and aggressive manipulator, Iago's motives lack proper conviction. This man is characterized as a user of men, a self centered man who only entertains his peers ( or superiors) for sport or profit. He is a jealous man, who lacks patience when provoked. Above all his empathy and connoisseurship in the classical art of manipulation make him an ultimate puppet master. Coupled with a slight provoke from the Devi,l Othello; Iago has found plenty cause to hate Othello as he hates hell pains.…
