Bullets Over Broadway is a must see musical. Every aspect of the show is perfect. The opening scene is staged at a night club with dancing girls and lustful men. For instance, in the scene where Cheech goes to the Lazy River, the lighting effects made the audience feel as if they were looking into the murky water. The cool colors of blue and gray gave the scene a dark and eerie mood. Lighting was also effective during the night club scenes in that it provided a feeling of temptation and lust. I think that it is important to note that the backdrop for this musical was very simple; therefore, the lighting is what made each scene realistic. In response to costumes, they were very 1929 New York like with some modern style. For the men, mostly suits and casual everyday clothes such as, tan pants with sweaters were worn. For the women, the night club girls as well as Olive wore provocative lingerie and Helen Sinclair wore very shiny professional Broadway attire. The rest of the women casted wore everyday clothes of the time period. Such as, simple skirts and blouses others wore flapper style dresses. The costuming played a very important part in this production (class and royalty was easily depicted) as well as the special effects costumes (the hot dogs). The singing ability in this show was spectacular. I was impressed by the lyrics of the songs as well as how the acting fit right in with the vocals. The dancing was phenomenal. I felt that the audience was a little dry and slow to react to the dialogue. For how much energy the show provided, I am unsure as to why the audience did not connect. Despite all the positive aspects of the show, the ending scene of the show was quite abrupt and it felt as though the audience was whisked out of the theater. Also, I do not recommend that you take young children to Bullets Over Broadway due to its display of violence, sexual content, and vulgar language.
