Quotable Quotes pg.14: plus c’est la même chose, plus ça change – The more things remain the same, the more they change. The narrator then says “Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even death by violence. Why did Brinker do this?
Is Brinker jealous of Gene and Finny?

Quotable Quotes:
Pg. 144 Fear seized my stomach like a cramp. I didn’t care what I said to him now; it was myself I was worried about. For if Leper was psycho it was the army which had done it to him, and I and all of us were on the brink of the army. This is significant because it gives a good point why would he want to go to war if Leper came back and is not mentally stable anymore?

Pg. 177 The excellent exterior acoustics recorded his rushing steps and the quick rapping of his cane along the corridor and on the first steps of the marble stairway. Then these separate sounds collided into the general tumult of his body falling clumsily down the white marble stairs. This shows that Phineas was so angered that he rushed into the hallway and fell down the stairs. If Brinker had not set this whole confessional up this would have never happened.

In the letter from Scout to Jem, we see Scout's’ point of view and how she feels. It shows that she is sad that Boo gave them so much and they did not give him anything in return like a good neighbor should have. To convey this, a flowery background symbolizes a neighbor's job to look after one another and the items in the pouch exhibits what Scout and Jem were given I feel that this establishes a feeling of growing maturity because the flowery background also symbolizes the growth of a young girl at the stage of coming of age experiences were a young bud becomes a flower not yet too old to shine like glitter which reveals that pouch holding items is like the pouch of a mother kangaroo because they hold their young in that pouch and Boo cares…

In the first section “A Whisper of Angels” Nicholas and Henry keep there feelings hidden because the society that they live in does not socially except two men having that kid of affection for each other. As I read in the first chapter “Henry had been my best friend since childhood” (Florida pg. 3-8) Nicholas and Henry have been best friends since they were little boys so they were very close . Nicholas recently lost his father so he still is mourning his death and Henry is always there for him emotionally. As I read ahead I realize that Nicholas and Henry have feelings for each other and the author , Florido fore shadows that when Henry says “The thing is Nic, I, well I just don’t” (pg.10) this is when Nicholas asked Henry if liked…

One could almost see Bowker’s stressed, confused, yet accepting face through the words in the letter. He’s pouring out his thoughts about life and his place in it, all along the way thinking about what he has said and what he’s going to say next as seen in the second part of the letter that Bowker shows: “God, this is starting to sound like some jerkoff vet crying in his beer. Sorry about that.” (150). It’s here that the roller coaster of emotion levels out a little bit and we can see direct evidence of Bowker start to use this letter as a platform for self-reflection. Generally self-reflection is supposed to be used to identify personal issues to fix them and eventually make yourself into a happier, better person. Here, Bowker attempts to…

For this reason, I chose this passage since this was the moment that Beli's life has permanently altered subsequent that unmerciful beating occurrence. This passage stood out while I was reading it and left an impression of heartbreak knowing the pain that Beli had to endure. After that merciless beating, I believe Beli lost confidence in humanity and died on the inside. In fact, I do not approve of violence also I disapprove of men laying a hand on any women under any circumstances. Beli's boyfriend Gangster took advantage of her because she was young and naive. Meanwhile, Beli fell for all of Gangster's dishonesty and believe all of his broken promises. Older men tend to take advantage of young girls and mold them when they are…

Both LOF and The Destructors seem to take place during World War II, and the boys are British in both stories. Both The Destructors and LOF was written in 1954, however the time period of both stories are just slightly different. The Destructors takes place near a bombed neighborhood in London, however the war has already ended. In LOF, the war seems to be still occurring, as the boys were evacuated from England, and planes and parachutists are seen during the book, signifying the war is still…

"The most beautiful as well as the most ugly inclinations of man are not part of a fixed biologically given human nature, but result from the social process which creates man." -Erich Fromm. Fromm is depicting exactly what A Farewell to Arms illustrates, which is that men are born neither good nor evil instead their actions define them. This is much like the philosophies of the Sophists like Jean Paul Sartre who also said that the existence of man comes before the essence of man, or in other words a man’s actions determines his nature. In his book, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway demonstrates how people are desperately trying to act purely despite their sins by contrasting the motif of clean and dirty and having Fredric Henry washing himself all the time.…

A FAREWELL TO ARMS, written in 1929, briefly after World War I, is a tragic story about the cruelties and gloominess of being a soldier of war, which once seemed like a somewhat alluring and admirable, and the psychological connection between love and suffering. Lt. Fredric Henry, the main character, is an American ambulance driver serving in the Italian army. Henry scoffs at his fellow naïve and air headed soldiers who fully support the war and its happenings. Death, violence, chaos, and brutality depress Henry, and he loses faith in the war’s cause. In the midst of the war, Henry meets Catherine Barkley, an English nurse’s assistant whose fiancé has been recently deceased. Catherine, despite her grief and sense of loss towards her once soon-to-be-husband, she begins to entice Henry. Her reasons for beginning a relationship with Henry are clear: Barkley wants to distance herself from her fiancé’s death. Henry also uses Barkley in a way. Because of the anguish that war is causing Henry, Catherine is a welcome distraction to get his mind off of war. Because of his experiences in war, his love affair with an American nurse, his depression which led to problems with alcohol abuse and suicide, Hemingway’s tale of tragedy is even more real and in-depth than ever.…
