Truth In Sentencing Laws

There’s a saying that goes “You do the crime, you do the time” and I believe if we get rid of truth in sentencing for non-violent offenders that saying will go down in flames. I am against getting rid of truth and sentencing laws because the laws help lessen the crime rate, reduce the amount of repeat offenders, and ensure all offenders serve the time they deserve to. Truth in sentencing laws are laws require that prisoners serve at least 85 percent of their term regardless of their behavior in prison. Initially, we should keep truth in sentencing laws for non-violent offenders because it will help lessen the crime rate. The crime rate will decrease because you will have all these criminals off the streets. Also, there will be no one to recruit the children if we keep prisoners behind bars. We wouldn’t have to triple lock our doors because we’re afraid of being robbed or worse. Children would be able to play outside and not be watched like hawks by their parents. So, we need truth in sentencing laws. Additionally, truth in sentencing laws for non-violent criminals is needed to reduce the amount of repeat offenders. It has been reported that 61% of all felons are repeat offenders. Repeat offenders are people that have been to jail more than once. Studies show that overall, 56.8% of adults serving short jail sentences of less than 12 months reoffend within a year, going on to commit an average of 4.5 further offences each. I believe if these criminals are in prison longer they will not commit more crimes and become repeat offenders because they will have experienced jail and not want to go back. This is why I am against getting rid of truth in sentencing laws. Lastly, truth in sentencing laws for criminals who are non-violent because it ensure all offenders serve the time they deserve to. Prisoners need to serve their time longer because they need to learn their lesson and know what they did was wrong. Also, serving longer times helps...
