Research Question: How does the amount of water present 5m from the ocean and 20m away from the ocean affect the circumference of the coconut trees ten metres from the ground?

Aim: To find out how the amount of water available 5m from the ocean and 20m away from the ocean affects the circumference of coconut trees ten metres from the ground.

Hypothesis:

➢ The coconut trees found 5m from the ocean receives more amount of water than those found 20m away from the ocean. Therefore I expect that the circumference of coconut trees found 5m from the ocean will have a greater circumference than those 20m away from the ocean. One reason is, water is a very essential element of plants (coconut trees) therefore availability of water will enhance the growth of the coconut trees in height and circumference. It is also a possibility that the soil 5m from the ocean has more nutrients and minerals because it is moist hence support these other elements but the soil 20m from the ocean will probably be a little dry since they do not receive enough water hence will contain few nutrients and minerals. Nutrients and minerals support the growth of plants (coconut trees) therefore the circumference of coconut trees 5m from the ocean will be greater than those 20m from the ocean.

Variables:

➢ Independent Variables – amount of water ( we estimated that the amount of water 5m from the ocean will be greater than that 20m away from the ocean ).

➢ Dependent Variables – circumference of the coconut trees measured 10m from the ground. (cm )

➢ Controlled Variables

• Same species of trees: We only measured the circumference of coconut trees. Other trees have different sizes of their circumference because of their type of species or other factors. This could interfere in our data collection thus the species measured was only of the coconut trees

To measure and compare the water level of marsh and channel, the class moved along the levy and placed meter sticks into marsh (B) and opposing channel (A). We had four locations for variable: The T (1), Caution Sign (2), Meris’ Bench (3), and the Point (4). Since the meter sticks were not exactly placed to set ‘0’ as the begging of change, the ‘0’ was adjusted depend on the location. The experiment location started with 1 to 4 and came back from 4 to 1. Therefore, each location has different elapsed time. For example, site 4 (The Point) has shortest time because we put meter sticks and took off without any moving location.…

The experiment proposed by the winning group consisted of the class dividing into groups of two or three. Each group then had to fill a labeled cup of water with 100 mL of stream water. Groups then had to cut 1.5 X 1.5 cm square samples of each leaf species (Norway and Silver). The leaves being cut for samples were leaves that had been soaking in Chicago River water for two weeks prior to lab. Each specific sample was then labeled with a colored pin in order to distinguish the samples and then both samples were placed into the labeled cup of stream water. Finally, three amphipods were placed into the cup containing the two samples. The amphipods were then left in the cup for one week, after which the leaves were removed and bagged by the…

When we entered forest A, I looked around me and noticed a lot of familiar trees. Many of the leaves were wide and had points. When our group was finished in forest A, we had a total of fifty one maple trees. We went onto forest B and finished our measurements we had a total of forty-eight maple trees. Our next hypothesis was that the pond forest would be the older forest out of the two. When we first got to forest B, we noticed that the pond had a significantly larger amount of lower level vegetation. We figured the reasoning for this was because forest B received more sunlight to the forest floor. We also noticed that there were less dead trees and the live trees seemed to be smaller in circumference. The only problem was that the pond forest seemed to be less bothered than the one behind the elementary school. I didn’t make much sense of this. I figured if the forest was farther away, which it was indeed, it would be less disturbed and contain bigger trees. Therefore, I was a tad confused. Although, it did make sense to me that by receiving more sunlight, the forest would have more lower level…

There are many different ecosystems on this planet. They include tundra’s, desserts, grasslands, etc. However, the tropical rainforest is truly the world’s most diverse biome in both structure and species diversity. The Tropical rainforest is characterized by a dense growth of trees and by the continuously canopy that is formed by the broad- leaved Evergreen trees. There is also large amounts of precipitation annually and there is no dry season, which is a major factor for the organisms in the biome.…
