She has also taken the considerable time and effort needed to unravel and describe the complexities, rivalries, and tensions which characterized the peacetime navy in the three decades after the War of 1812. The result is an excellent account of the difficulties of service in a relatively small peacetime navy with too many ambitious younger officers, too many unretired older officers, and too few opportunities for individual advancement.
