“I hope they use me…maybe they can make me smart…maybe ill be like everybody else and people will like me and be friendly.” Intelligence made Charlie Gordon, a character in the short science fiction story, Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes, struggle in many ways such as self-consciousness, troubles with communication, and a loss of the people he cares about, by a single operation, thinking that intelligence will lead him to happiness. Of course intelligence is not always a source of happiness. Initially, Charlie Gordon, a very kind, naive man, didn’t care what he was as long as people like him, but after the operation, he became a whole different person. He was self-conscious, especially while staying with Joe and Frank.” I never knew that Joe and frank and others liked to make fun of me… (pg 33).”Maybe it was good that he found out but it hurt him mentally to find out that his purpose in the Joe/Frank/Charlie friendship was to be made fun of.
