This I Believe Essay
Throughout elementary and middle school, I always thought education wasn’t as important as other things such as the sports I played, hanging out with friends and doing things that I enjoyed. I would often find myself blowing off homework and doing it last minute or not even doing it all. I’ve changed quite a bit since those days, but it took me some time to realize that what I was doing wasn’t any good for me. I believe that at some point in your life, you have to realize that education is everything and you won’t go anywhere in life without it.
Elementary wasn’t a big deal because I was still able to pass and move on to the next grade. The only thing though is that I would find myself sitting out of recess for not doing a simple five question homework assignment. Having recess motivated me a little to do my homework just so I could go out and play basketball with my friends. I would always hear speeches by the counselors and teachers about doing your best, but it would go out one ear and out the other. At this point in my life, I obviously didn’t realize how important education was and I guess my only excuse was for being young and still being in elementary school. When middle school came around was when things started to go a little downhill. Since there was no recess I had very little motivation. Yes, I still did my homework at times but I wouldn’t study for tests, I wouldn’t go in for tutorials, I just didn’t care. My math grade was the absolute worst and on top of it, I didn’t do anything to fix it. My parents would get so angry with me and I kept telling them that I was trying my best, but that wasn’t enough and those grades would often get me grounded. My mom would always tell me that if I wanted to go far in life, then I would have to try my best at everything and put in the work.
