FEELS SO GOOD WHEN I STOP
READ
Romans 8:18-21
18 I believe that the present suffering is nothing compared to the coming glory that is going to be revealed to us. 19 The whole creation waits breathless with anticipation for the revelation of God's sons and daughters. 20 Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice—it was the choice of the one who subjected it—but in the hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from slavery to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of God's children.

REFLECT
A guy happened upon another guy who was hitting himself in the head with a hammer. He asked, "Hey, why are you hitting yourself with that hammer?" The other guy responded, "Because it feels so good when I stop."

OK, stupid story. But it is true that good stuff seems so much better in direct contrast to bad stuff. For example, after it rains everyday for a week, that first sunny day seems all the more beautiful, doesn't it? Enduring bad stuff helps us to appreciate good stuff more.

In today's passage, Paul acknowledges that life isn't always fair, it isn't always easy, and there will be bad stuff that frustrates us and, sometimes, even causes us to suffer. But, he says, the worst of the worst that life deals us is nothing compared to the best of the best that God has in store for us in Heaven.

So, what will Heaven be like? We have some idea, by contrasting the bad stuff. If you have ever felt alone and rejected...if you have ever been betrayed or ridiculed...if you have ever been sick...if you have ever mourned the loss of a loved one...you have experienced the opposite of Heaven.

But God does much more than sit around saying, "Just wait for Heaven." God offers us hope, guidance, and comfort everyday.

RESPOND
When faced with life's bad stuff, turn to God in prayer.

Helen Keller once said that “although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.” This quote means that there is more to life than negativity, there is also a sense of accomplishment over such negative things. Such triumph can only be accomplished after the fact of the occurrence of a negative event. Two books that support this are Lord of the Flies, and Night. In “Lord of the Flies” the boys on the island must overcome evil and savagery in order to survive. In Ellie Wiesel’s Night, the protagonist, Ellie, faces the troubles of the Nazi concentration camps, loses his faith in God, but survives the horrific event.…

Paul learns the briefness of life in retrospect of all other things. He sees his closest comrades and best friends die beside him, leaving him with a feeling of urgency to live a life worth living, as it could end at any minute. Simply stated by Paul, “Life is short” (139). Paul and his living comrades aspire to, “make ourselves as comfortable and sleep, and eat as much as we can stuff our bellies, and drink and smoke so that hours are not wasted” (139). Paul realizes that every minute lived is one minute closer to his inevitable death, whether it be from fighting or disease or natural causes, as James Dean declared, “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”…

Sometimes we think that our plans must lead down a better road, or that God must not love us enough to protect us from this pain we feel, but God actually uses the painful experiences to further develop our character. Vivian Thomas could have given up when it became too discouraging, but instead he persevered and became an inspiration to many people. During times that are hard, God teaches us more about life, ourselves, and most importantly, about Him. Sometimes it is even necessary to go through a difficult time before we are able to realize the ways in which we need to grow and…

A friend once wrote to me:” When I think about the problems that I face currently in my life I roll tears and cry bitterly to God for testing me and treating me in the way God does. If God were visible to me I would talk to him bitterly about the illnesses and sufferings I’m experiencing in my day-to-day life since the beginning of last year. Yet I cry and bend down on my knees begging God to forgive me in case I have transgressed.…
