Systems Applications and Products, known as SAP, is an enterprise resource planning system (ERP) used by Arizona Electric Power. “An ERP system integrates internal and external management information across an entire organization. Enterprise resource planning systems automate this activity with an integrated computer-based application. Its purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders” (Rapid Implementation and Project Planning, 2001, p. 9). An integrated ERP system provides real-time data such as sales forecasting, inventory optimization, order tracking, revenue tracking, purchasing, and costing.
SAP’s common database supports all applications and consists of functional areas that include finance/accounting, manufacturing, sales, service, human resources, supply chain management and project management for all levels of Arizona Electric Power’s utility industry and addresses the needs of generation, transmission, and distribution. The inventory management module of SAP provides management with material stocks on a quantity and value basis, provides planning, entry, and documentation of all goods movement, and carries out the physical inventory.
All tangible materials are classified in SAP’s system according to like groups and are broken down by physical location (specific warehouse location) and then by storage location (shelves, pallets, bins, etc.). Minimum and maximum material levels are maintained by real-time data originated by SAP’s reservation process and used by the powerplant and project systems. The reservation process is created at the time a work order is initiated. It identifies material requirements, checks replenish limits, and guarantees specified inventory levels.

The company is reengineering the company’s Intranet/Information systems and enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. The upper management has chosen to implement SAP to connect all aspects of the company; accounting, manufacturing, aircraft services, supply inventory, and customer resource management (CRM). Implementing this new information system (IS) will allow the different parts of the company to operate as one, by allowing the various modules in SAP to communicate and exchange data. SAP will replace all of the outdated and splintered software the company currently uses by allowing easier communication between the departments and the programs that are used. The change was started about three years ago and will be completed in about two years for a total of five years to complete and be fully implemented. Connecting all of the different departments will save a tremendous amount of money for the company. Reengineering the IS systems will allow the sales department and customer representatives more easy access to the customer’s information, such as current and future orders, current aircraft service status or new aircraft delivery time; thereby increasing the customers value and customer…

NIBCO’s Inc. is a midsized manufacturer of values and pipe fitting headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins, 2012, p.468). NIBCO had over 3000 employees and reported $461 million annual revenue. The company implemented SAP R/3 among its ten plants and four new distribution centers. Top management did not take the advice of their consultants concerning taking a slower approach instead of the BIG Bang approach, instead they decided to go along with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to eliminate the legacy system and replace them with integrated systems. There were four different types of legacy systems that supported the order entry, manufacturing, distribution and accounting functions (Brown et.al 2012, p.470). Different sections in the organization were using their own versions of manufacturing software package with separate database. NIBCO’s decided they needed standardized software across the company that’s how ERP package came about.…

I want to explain the origins of this technology and take a closer look at its major features. I will also try to show how this system increases business value and where its limitations are. Last but not least I show some example of practical use in small and medium companies and I will try to determine the latest trends in the industry of this technology. Sap America Case Study

In 1972 SAP was founded by four young software engineers who had come up with a concept for an integrated software package, and their current employer turned it down. This initial idea sparked their first major enterprise information systems product. This took their company public, and after five years SAP’s market capitalization was $15 billion. The expansion that occurred began in Walldorf, Germany where SAP was founding and spread to the America Group. This began in the late 1980’s and was crucial to the SAP’s growth. Once their overseas group took off, there were many elements of their business that needed to be altered and improved to account for their growth. Although they began as a product based company it was very clear to everyone involved that taking care of the client, through implementation and support was crucial to differentiating themselves from competitors within the market, and a key to their survival. The development of an industry strategy was another crucial action that paralleled the growth and support of SAP. This vertical industry strategy was to be delivered through industry centers of expertise (ICOEs), which to serve as a bridge between R/3 customers and the product development organization. This partnering was the key to SAP’s consistent growth, by using the manpower of outside and inside consultants.…

In 1994, after a significant strategic planning effort took place, NIBCO Inc., decided to implement a plan to, “Go Live” with a new SAP program. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012) The reasons behind NIBCO’s decision to implement and ERP System are those that are familiar to other companies who have made the same decision. One of the key conclusions from the strategic planning that led to the ERP implementation was that the organization could not prosper with its current information systems. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012) They systems that they were currently using had evolved into a patchwork of legacy systems and reporting tools that could not talk to each other. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012) The lack of systems communications were due to the fact that over the years, NIBCO had a manufacturing package that ran on Hewlett Packard and an accounting system that ran on IBM and a distribution package that was repackaged to run on IBM. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012)The differences in the systems over the years led to lack of digital communication between the systems. Not only were the systems not communicating with each other, there was also concerns about being able to grow the company and become more global without an integrated information capability. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012) Another reason why NIBCO decided to implement a SAP system was because the systems development staff spent most of their time building custom interfaces between the systems, trying to resolve the disconnects between them. The information systems people were not particularly happy a lot because the systems would blow up on regular bases due to the ad hoc changes that were often made. (Brown, Dehayes, Hoffer, Martin & Perkins. 2012) Even though there were several different legitimate reasons for NIBCO to implement a SAP system,…

NIBCO has 100 years history and $ 400 million revenues. The main product is flow control like valves, fitting, and hangers so on. Compare to other same types of manufacturers, NIBCO wants to provide low price and differentiation of flow control products. In these days, the product quality is not only a requirement among the commodity markets. The value-added services also are good ways to attract more customers. However, when NIBCO wants to give value-added services to customers, the old system cannot suit their needs. The managers of NIBCO decided to use SAP R/3 implementation project, which helps them to deal with issues. From 1998 to 2001, SAP R/3 implementation has run smoothly in NIBCO. As a supply chain business processes, the improvements are both in supply-side and customer-side. The SAP implementation begins a demand-pull system instead of forecast push-system in NIBCO. Further on, NIBCO wants to reduce costs, improve customer satisfaction, and increase revenues. Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) program and a multiple customer service channels were initiated to enhance customer loyalty and increase electronic ordering. Wirelesses scanning for warehouse management and inventory replenishment policies were constantly processed to improve worker productivity and order fulfillment accuracy. Raw material purchase consolidation, followed by supplier-managed inventory pilots results in cost savings practices. Therefore, NIBCO uses vendor-managed inventory (VMI) program to meet their wants. After using this approach, NIBCO builds closer relationship with key customers.…
