Eudora Welty’s “A Worn Path” tells the story about an “old Negro woman” who walks to town to purchase medicine and a small gift for her sick grandson. In”A Worn Path” Welty explains Phoneix Jackson encounters on her journey down the path, it symbolize the views of southern whites during the era of racisim. As Phoneix travels to town, she comes across a white hunter who helps her out of a ditch ,and also talk down on African Americans. the white hunter even has the nerve to point a loaded gun to Phoenix face thinking it was going to scary her.

Eudora Welthy’s “A Worn Path” is full of many symbolism and themes. For example, the name of the main character Phoenix. Phoenix is a myth bird that rises from ashes. Welty’s never states the age of Phoenix but Welty does describe Phoenix as “very old and small”. The readers know that Phoenix is also a typical elderly because Phoenix is walking down the path and she is saying “out of my way, all you foxes,owls,beetles,jack rabbits,coons and wild animals!” the readers also know that Phoenix is an elderly lady because she states to the woman at the store that “My grandson.It was my memory had left me. There I sat and forgot why I made my long trip.” Welty’s also describes Phoenix as “Old Negro woman,” during that time the word Negro was used to refer to a person with a dark skin who is comes from Africa. As Phoenix walks on the path she makes a statement like “seems like there is chains about my feet,time I get this far” this symbolize memories of slavery and how africans were brought over to America to be slaves.

“A Worn Path” symbolize a journey that Phoenix has traveled this path more than one time. The “worn path” is symbolic to a christianity that made the christians who were on a quest for religions reason.The path represents the challenges and hardships African Americans went through during the 1930’s and 1940’s.
