A Woman's Place in Society

Women Place In Society
-------------------------------------------------

Man and woman are the two parts of a whole. One is incomplete without the other. The Holy Qur'an says, ''And we have created you in pairs''(male and female). The existence of one without the other would be colourless and boring. The need of the one for the other is so great that it was honored even in heaven when Eve was created for Adam. Moreover the union of both is necessary for human survival. Besides this need, they are a complete source of joy and comfort for each other. It is said that man is the crown of the universe but it is woman who adorns this crown with her charms. That is what Milton asserts in Paradise Lost:''O fairest of creation! Last and best Of all God's works!''.
In Islamic society, women are treated with utmost honour. She has the honour of being a mother, a wife, a sister and a daughter. No other religion gives her so much importance as Islam gives her.The Holy Prophet in his last address asked the Muslims to treat women and the slaves kindly. As a mother, she enjoys matchless honour. The Holy Prophet(PBUH) said, ''Verily, the heaven lies under thy mother's feet''.
In our society, women are not respected and honoured especially in villages. In villages, they do not even get the chances of education. They have to work in the fields with men. Their life in villages is very hard.
In cities, most of the women enjoy the opportunities of education. Their life is as much better as that of men. They can take part in every kind of activity. They are allowed to go to colleges, offices and universities. They even can compete with men in election. In many countries of the world, they have proved their skills.
As for the liberty of women is concerned, they should be allowed to take part in all kinds of political, social, economic and cultural activities. But they should also realize their duty as a Muslim women. Islam imposes

There are many political, religious, and cultural factors that shape the lives of Islamic women. Islam is one of the world’s fastest growing religions; however, Brooks argues that “Islam’s holiest texts have been misused to justify the repression of women, and how male pride and power have warped the original message of this once liberating faith.” The book also shows these factors have slowly been taking away women’s rights, rather than furthering them.…

Writings in the Qur'an show that there was a time of praising women for their work. Mohammad Keramat Ali said, in The Message: Selected Verses from The Holy Qur'an, "I shall not lose sight of the work of any of you who works (in My way) be it man or woman." That statement is clear proof that at the start of Islam, women were not viewed as inferior to men in a credible man's eyes. At the same time, other writings in The Holy Qur'an, one specifically by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, shows the belief that the Prophet must tell women to "draw their veils" because it is more likely they will not be hurt if they are covered. This infers that an exposed woman is a women in danger. The Prophet Muhammad was one of the main sources in The Holy Qur'an and he was known to love and respect his wife, Khadijah. With that respect of women in mind, other women became his earliest and bravest followers of his revelations. Muhammad's wives also played a huge, drastic role in the compiling of the Qur'an.…

Religion goes hand in hand with culture, and in the Muslim countries this is very apparent. The cultural importance of men over women may have stemmed from religion, however it was further recognized when imperialist countries introduced capitalism and class divides. “Islam must combat the wrenching impact of alien forces whose influence in economic, political, and cultural permutations continues to prevail” (Stowasser 1994, 5). Now, instead of an agrarian state where both men and women had their place, difficulties have formed due to the rise in education and awareness that women can and do have a place in society beyond domestic living Though women are not equal to men anywhere around the world, the differences between men and women are greater possibly in the Muslim world, partially due to religion and culture. “Fewer women are educated in the Muslim world than in other culture areas...The percentage of women working other than agriculture is probably the smallest in the world, the birth rate the highest, and the laws regarding marriage and related matters most unequal” (Stowasser 1994, 5). Though, of recent years inequality has been blamed on the Islamic religion, gender inequalities were in the Middle East before Islam. However, by radical groups and male elite, women are being discriminated because of their gender due to religious connotations amongst other things. The male bias, like in most religions, has been enforced within society like in the text of the Qur’an. Keddie and Beck asserts that, “In Islamic law women have male guardians; woman’s testimony is worth half that of a man; women are considered to have less reason than men” (Beck and Keddie 1978, 25-26). So the Qur’an in many of the Middle Eastern countries has been taken and formed in ‘Islamic Law’ which may not entirely reflect what is said in the Holy Book, but has been used to discriminate and divide, not only gender, but class and status. What will…

Under Sharia Law women are not allowed to walk the streets alone and in some countries Islamic women are not even allowed to drive. This basic freedom of transporting themselves needs to be given to women if they are to overcome the oppressive Muslim society. The Quran says that “Men are in charge of women , because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other “ 4:34 If women are to be seen as individuals in Islamic society and not just wives used for making babies, there needs to be to the equality and respect, between men and women.…

Having done some research myself, I have come to understand that it is not that under Islam, women are denied equal rights, but because of some traditional tendencies that have made life more difficult for them than it should be. I personally feel that it is been due to a loss of a true Islamic perspective that women 's rights have suffered. Because of the culture of the Middle Eastern nations, the majority of the women here have a very low status. The idea of male dominance is very prominent in these countries because of their strong beliefs and culture. Many of these nations feel that the woman 's place is in the home caring for the children and taking care of the chores within the home.…

As the major religious text of Islam, it is therefore of great importance that the Qur’an seeks to improve the social position of women, intends women to be the spiritual equals of men, and gives them considerable economic rights (McKay et al 251). Even after Muhammed’s death, women continued to have many rights during the first and second caliphate, and their words were still regarded, even concerning social and spiritual matters (Ahmed 72). In fact, in the first two centuries of Islam, women had autonomy…

In male oriented societies, where sexism is the base of getting one's rights, women are deprived of education and due to their lack of knowledge; they are unable to challenge the difficulties they face society and work for themselves. They cannot get respectable jobs, being illiterate prevents them from taking part in politics or other social activities. It is not that these women are not gifted with the brains like that of men or they are not as talented as them. They may even be more intelligent than many of the men, but their intelligence is veiled behind the curtains of sexism, so is their talent.…
