A very old man with enormous wings literary analysis

Being Human in Gabriel Marquez’s “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” In “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings”, Gabriel Marquez tells the story of a supernatural occurrence in a fishing village. A man with wings who everyone thinks is an angel, crashes into the courtyard of Pelayo and Elisenda.The man looks like he is on the verge of death with a decrepit look. A neighbor woman tells the couple that the man is an angel who came for their sick baby, she tells them that he must be clubbed to death. At first, they decide to put him on a raft with some food and put him out to sea because they don’t have the heart to kill the man. But they discover that they can profit from him, so instead they lock him up in the chicken coop. The most important moment in this story is when Elisenda had begun to grow tired of all the people in her courtyard leaving their trash behind. So She decided to fence in her yard and charged five cents a person to come and see the angel in the chicken coop. Here the reader can see the undesirable emotions human nature has to offer. It shows how people act toward the unfamiliar to abuse it. This poses the question, What does it mean to be human?
Compassionate moments in this story are far and in in between. The people who come to see the angel in the cage throw things at him and treat him terribly like he is some circus animal. Without guidance human nature is not a kind one. Hard to see but there can be the coexistence of compassion and cruelty. Although, it tends to be more of the latter side. When the angel is being poked, prodded, and even branded by the crowd, the author writes,” The angel was the only one who took no part in his own act. His only supernatural virtue seemed to be patience.” These two lines explain how the angel is different from the people.
