A Trip to a Circus
It was during the school holidays last year. I was feeling bored and restless until one day when I came across an advertisement in the papers about a circus coming to my town. Naturally, I became curious and excited as I had never been to a circus before and looked forward to seeing a show that night.
We arrived at the circus grounds early to buy our tickets. I started exploring but, when I heard the growling of tigers and lions, I felt scared and ran back to my parents. Soon we were seated and the show was about to begin.
The first item was a comical one performed by monkeys dressed in coloured suits and little hats. They rode on horse-back round the ring. I really laughed at such a funny sight for they looked like tiny men. Next, there entered two pretty girls with two men on trapeze. They kept the spectators spellbound with their skillful stunts, swinging and exchanging places in the air to the accompaniment of soothing music. It was thrilling to watch them.
Then clowns in baggy costumes and funny, painted faces made their appearance. Suddenly, as one clown cried, I saw a spray of water squirting out from his eyes and he made everyone laugh with his antics, especially when he went tumbling down and his red nose shone like a light.
There were many other interesting items. I felt uneasy when the lions performed their act and heaved a sigh of relief when they were finally locked up again in their cage.
We went home happily after the show and I felt that the circus is a good form of

In the magazine article, “Clowning Around the World” by Meg Moss, anyone can understand the importance and the reasons for clowns in the past and the present such as advice, seeing the world differently, and; what is still used today, laughter. European kings and queens relied on clowns to give advice in silly ways that most others were too scared to say. On the other hand, Heyokas, which were believed to be gifted with wisdom and telling the future, showed the Lakota Sioux Indians what not to do and how to look at the bad things in life in a good way. Although clowns are mostly known for birthday parties and circuses, they can also work for hospitals by “cheering sick children and calming their fears.” Therefore, clowns have many other origins…

The object of the first task set was to create a performance in response to the stimulus given. The stimulus we received was a short passage from a story describing a circus, the description allowed us to freely explore our different interpretations because it was a broad and different approach to the typically happy and childlike setting of a circus. As a whole the class responded with quite abstract and solemn pieces, I feel the physical theatre reflected the tone of the stimulus well, all of the responses tended to lean towards drawing fear from the audience, for example instead of limiting the use of space to a typical theatre styled front on stage setting the use of proxemics broadened when groups branched out and included the audiences space during their performance, this gave the piece a threatening edge and popped the comfortable bubble that the audience would’ve usually been used to and expected.…

One of the things we talked about in our group was about Baileys significance in the story. We could not find any real reason that he was there except to add another view point of the circus in the story. Bailey's had his own side story in the book which made the story more real. The second thing that we also discussed was what happened in the story so far. We talked about how the book, “The Night Circus”, is a fairytale most likely set in the Victorian Era . The description of the way the characters talked, the scenery, clothing described as long dresses that went down to the ankle worn with gloves, and the girls hair was styled up in a bun all gave a old time feeling.…

The second area of the exhibit shows the many different masks used for the performance of Ring of Fire and the different props used for many of the important characters. The specifically designed costumes for the characters with mobility devices were just so large in scale, and they had to be made perfectly for it to be used effectively, and the thought of that being made just shows the amount of work that this piece took. The gallery itself felt like a medium, and every mask was part of the larger picture. There were many masks that were hung from the ceiling and props that were hung on the walls that were just so extravagant. The masks that were used had a very bright color, a very nice use of gold, which gave the ideas of sun and warmth, which were very akin to the idea of “Ring of Fire”. The props hung on the walls were massive in size, and were also very colorful, the same colors were used, and the use of lighting gave it an awe inspiring feel, as well as a sense of warmth, as if it was a powerful symbol, yet humble. The use of negative space within the gallery was to give the viewer a path to walk around, and see each and every mask and prop with detail, as well as give an illusion of being within the crowd of masks, as if the viewer was participating in the Ring of Fire. There was also a projection of clips of the Ring of Fire, on the 2 side walls, where it also gave the sense of immersion within the crowd. Additionally, there was an audio track playing that, according to a pamphlet given in the beginning, had music that “would manifest the Seven Grandfather Teachings in song while the poets developed their poems”. It was music that represented the 7 different symbols shown, as well as spoken word poetry performed by the “Orators” or people who played them. Through this gallery, the effect of immersion was…

The Butterfly Circus is an inspiring short film. It gave me a great impact especially during my very first beginning weeks of Master in Learning Sciences classes. I still feel miserable and less confident to get through this challenging course, but this film came just in time to encourage me, as per the Showman, Mr Mendez said to Will, the limbless man: “ The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph”.…

In the 1930s America is suffering for the Great Depression. Many people are jobless and homeless, and everybody is sad and worried for the difficult economic situation. Mendez is the charismatic master of a small circus, the Butterfly Circus, and he leads his troupe through Southern California; along the way, they perform- sometimes for free- to bring some light in the dull lives of people. One evening, they stop at a funfair where there are carousels, games and other entertainment. At the Carnival Side Show Mendez meets Will, the main attraction. He has no limbs and is on show as a freak of nature, alongside other odd characters. Will is bitter and unhappy but after meeting Mendez he decides to leave the Carnival and manages to hide on one of the Butterfly circus trucks to escape. People in the circus welcome him but Mendez tells Will that he must find his own way to become part of the act. Will starts to know his new friends and learns that m any of them have a sad story: Mendez has given them a second chance in life. One day Will accidentally realizes that he can swim, so he decides to perform a difficult act in the Circus: he must climb a tall pole, from the top of which he then dives into a small tank full of water. Will is now happy as he is in the show, not because of his odd aspect, but because of who he is and what he can do. There are relationships between the three goals from Renewing the Vision and the three statements listed below made by Mendez. First of all, Mendez says “There is nothing inspiring about a man’s imperfections on display.” This quote is related with the first goal in the Renewing Vision that we have to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. Each individual needs to act like little Jesus and follow Jesus’ ministry. Everyone is imperfect, but each person have to work hard to live as disciples of Jesus Christ by…

At first I was hesitant to go to a school talent show, due to the assumption of lack of talent. Even though some acts were a little shaky here and there, overall it was a excellent concert. I saw an array of acts ranging from Witney Houston to rap artists, and even dancing. Especially at the end when there was a dance battle between two groups, while the judges were deciding the winner. With a grand prize of 25$ I was surprised there were so many acts of quality. This was a great experience and I plan to go next year.At first I was hesitant to go to a school talent show, due to the assumption of lack of talent.
