A trip to the carnival
Description of a fairground

Warm rays of golden sunshine glimmered off the puddles that gathered in the gaps in the cobblestone pavement, a peaceful morning was soon to be disturbed as the cacophony of sounds started, from old rickety rides. The taste of diesel fumes burns the back of the throat of anyone who gets too close to the rickety cat and mouse ride.

Music from the vast array of rides blend to form one strange droning song over a thumping backbeat. Lively and fast, the bass vibrates through your body.

Groups of excitable toddlers caked in muck and dirt are being herded along; whilst their mothers hold onto them with a viselike grip. One lags behind, dawdling whilst gazing eagerly at the waltzers, while his mother hauls him along, with no avail

Dazzling, spinning, luminous; the lights spun round in a haze of spectrum colours, whilst teenagers girls let out high pitched screams at the top of their voices as they plunge downwards on the colossal roller coaster.

Heavenly wafts of delicious scents pour out covering the park attracting crowds from all over to the rundown dingy fast food stands made from rotting wood with faded red peeling paint reading FAST FOOD which is occupied by a balding, unhygienic, middle aged man wearing a filthy tatty shirt and bedraggled tracksuit bottoms occupying a bored look on his face.

A blue mouthed child stood bawling out as a distressed grandparent picked out all her pockets to find no money left to buy the child any more multicoloured sugar coated treats, her face is old and tired. Her eyes show the strain of years of late nights. She never smiles.

As the ride explodes with noise, blurring out everywhere, the operator yawns and throws a lever. Outside his hut the ride accelerates, then, climax over, it slows and stops, the music still blurring out. The controller stumbles out of the box and lets the people off of the ride. Some go straight to the back of the queue, others teeter off, stumbling over

This is a very bright and happy song that is full of energy. The boogie woogie piano is the driving piece in this song instrumentally. The rhythm and sway of the piano accompanied by the clapping sound of the snare drums is very upbeat and invigorating. The saxophones play very catchy riffs in the choruses of the song. The bass is so smooth and has a very soothing sound. This is a loud song that stays that way from the beginning of the song to the end. Next enters that loud but cool, yet deep and raspy voice. The voice is such a powerful presence and the shouting makes it feel like it reaches out and grabs you. The saxophone solo has a hint of jazz and big band in the sound. The pace of this song stays the same at 4 beats for each bar. “Shake Rattle and Roll” is repeated several times throughout the song. There is a very soulful call-and-response melody present in this song that just gives a feeling of excitement that moves you from head to toe. The singer’s voice is the key ingredient that guides the instruments in creating the melody in this song. The extremes of this tune aren’t too high or too low the stay at a pretty even mid-range. There are no huge dramatic changes in the song. The vocal harmony is smooth and incredible; it just makes you feel really good. The pitch of the voice is low and the instruments pitch change just a little at times but nothing to significant. The notes, like the title of the song, are repeated. The repetition of the repeated notes happen more in the background of the song and they are not long and fast. Shake Rattle and Roll has a homophonic texture. This jump blues song with the boogie woogie piano has one clear melody. This clear melody is supported by harmonies of the other instruments in the band. It has a simple-verse chorus structure. “Shake rattle and Roll” uses a 12-bar blues pattern. The 12-bar blues is composed of twelve groups that have four-beat measures.…

When I first listened to this song, the first musical element that I heard were the drums. It give me a sense of vibe that goes through you with every hit which makes a good thing inside you. It starts off with a crash symbol and a bass drum hitting together, and then all you hear is just the bass drum hitting with the ride symbol hitting every now and then. This helps the audience get engaged into what the song is going to be about and what happens next. After a few measures, you hear the lead acoustic guitar. It starts playing the melody that you hear throughout the whole song. The instruments that are playing make you feel sad and happy at the same time. So mostly the main three musical elements that you…

Provocatively decorated caravans snaked to their designated pitches where their attached rides, origami giants, unfurled with a flourish and sprung into life. The warmth of the sun was now a distant but pleasant memory, and an almost eerie chill enshrouded the scene. The eyes of spellbound children, wide with awe, traced intricate patterns across the night sky, their senses bewitched by the array of colossal machines that spun vigorously. A crowd gathered around the most spine-chilling, hair-raising ride, a brief splash of tarmac was the only distinction between those who could not barely contain their desire to be the next in the queue, and those who watched, petrified. Leah and I cautiously joined the queue, the Ferris wheel towering over us. The concrete beneath my feet vibrated with the sheer energy and sound of the music that blared out, and the colour of the exciting rides seemed to spin before my eyes. I was jostled about, pushed from side to side, so that it seemed as though the ground itself was rising up, attempting to shake me from its surface, and the glow from the moon, streaming down unchallenged by even a single cloud, sent an eerie shiver down my spine. The sudden feeling of panic and dread rushed through my body, the feeling that something terrible and dangerous was going to happen. I looked over at Leah, her eyes gleaming with joy, anticipating the thrill of the adventurous rides. The realization then hit me, there was no need to be so uptight and worried about everything, this evening was a time…

The next night it happened again. Putting the warm dishes away in the cupboard, she turned and saw the child's grey eyes approving her movements. In the next room was the man, his chin sunk in the open collar of his favorite wool shirt. He was dozing after her good supper. The shirt was the grey of the child's trusting gaze. She began yelping without tears, retching in between. The man woke in alarm and carried her in his arms to bed. The boy followed them up the stairs, saying, "It's all right, Mommy," but this made her scream. "Mommy is sick," the father said, "go and wait for me in your room."…

The young couple who had built the cottage, were anxious that their anticipated young one would experience the quiet of the forest, rather than the harsh life of the city. The river had beckoned them, and they created a nice solitary life to wait for their child. However when their daughter was born, they were utterly disappointed. The child did not utter a single sound as she was thrust into the world. She only blinked her eyes and wondered quiet thoughts. She wondered why she was unable to open her mouth and why she was unable to express her love to the two people who watched her…

Camille Saint-Saens wrote the ‘Carnival of the Animals’ while he was on holiday as a light hearted musical joke. It was originally planned for the students of Sain-Saens at the music school where he taught piano, Ecole Niedermeyer but he had little time to compose. The work was subtitled “Grand Zoological Fantasy” and it became Saint-Saens intent to perform it as a surprise at the annual Mardi Gras concert of cellist Charles Lebouc in Paris in February 1886.…

That first ride on one of these fantastic beasts gave me an instant rush of adrenaline. As the death-defying ride started, a lump in my throat pulsed like a dislodged heart as I embarked on an adventure similar to walking the plank. As the ride gained speed, the resistance to gravity built up against my body until I was pinned to the back wall of my cage. An almost imperceptible pause as the wheel reached the top of its climb lulled my body into a false sense of security. As quickly as I had relaxed, there was an assault…

The first thing I noticed was the stress apparent on the little girl’s face, an expression with a deep frown and furrowed eyebrows above her eyes that screamed pain. Only appearing about five years old, this girl looked like she had just arrived from a foreign third-world country, hungry and oppressed. She was a walking skeleton, swimming in the clothes she was wearing. She had a smooth, cocoa-colored complexion, with her skin looking as soft as the fuzz on a fresh peach. Looking down, I saw this vibrant skin was contradicted with dirty clothes. The little girl was wearing a pair of faded gray jeans with big, open holes that exposed her knobby knees and…

Brazilian Carnival History is richer, more varied and more interesting than most people think. There is much more to Carnival than just parties. The carnival can trace its roots back to an ancient Greek festival held each spring to honor Dionysus, the god of wine (“Brazilian Carnival in Rio”). The Romans adopted the festival to honor two of their gods, Bacchanalia and Saturnalia. During the Roman festival, slaves and masters would exchange clothes and spend the day in drunken revelry. The Catholic Church later modified the festival as a celebration leading up to Ash Wednesday (“Brazilian Carnival in Rio”).…
