ABSTRACT The basic concept of this project is manufacturing of aluminum alloys by forging process and different equipment like pneumatic hammer forging machines, furnaces, saddles, dies etc. and their qualitative analysis. The use of forging is to reduce material wastage and manufacturing time, avoids complex machining operations and used for mass production. The components are manufactured by various operations like up-setting, punching, draw-down and flattening. The study includes heat treatment and qualitative analysis also. Pneumatic forging hammers, hand tools like saddles, mandrels, punches, calipers and tongs will play prominent role in this process. The

    Metal Fabrication

Assembling (joining of the pieces) is done by welding, binding with adhesives, riveting, threaded fasteners, or even yet more bending in the form of a crimped seam. Structural steel and sheet metal are the usual starting materials for fabrication, along with the welding wire, flux, and fasteners that will join the cut pieces. As with other manufacturing processes, both human labour and automation are commonly used. The product resulting from fabrication may be called a fabrication. Shops that specialize in this type of metal work are called fab shops. The end products of other common types of metalworking, such as machining, metal stamping, forging, and casting, may be similar in shape and function, but those processes are not classified as fabrication.…

Metalcraft’s sourcing process consists of several steps involving design, sampling prototypes, quality testing, and requesting a quote. Then a commodity sourcing strategy team evaluates their options using cost analysis, long term agreement considerations, tooling costs, capacity requirements, timing constraints, etc. Ultimately the buyer makes the final decision after taking everyone’s input into consideration. The quality control process which began during the sourcing phase also has several steps to it. First characteristics of the product are determined and then a method to evaluate them is selected which results in a control plan which are approved by the product engineer and plant quality department. How frequently a quality check occurs is determined by the importance of the part, the quantity produced, and how often new inventory is received.…

[2] reported that the use of pulsed arc welding in place of conventional GTAW increases the output by 200–400%, reduces consumption of argon by three to ten times, and also reduces the cost of 1 m weld deposition by three to five times. The aim of pulsing is mainly to achieve maximum penetration without excessive heat build-up, by using the high current pulses to penetrate deeply and then allowing the weld pool to dissipate some of the heat during relatively longer arc period at a low current. The increased numbers of variables in the pulsed GTAW process also support the possibility of increased control of the solidification process.…

    Cold Rolling Lab

The present study reports the effect of cold working on bending and tensile behavior of Brass, Copper, Aluminium. A series of experiments involving cold rolling (58% cold work) have been conducted for those three materials. The Vickers number of hardness for cold rolled specimens can be show very clearly that it has increasing up the number itself likewise the number of thickness reduction which also increasing. Which its number of Vickers can be rated as follow as Aluminium < Copper < Brass ; this means that Brass has the most tensile strength, Aluminium is easily to bend and Copper has the average all capable of these three. It has been shown that, Three materials before cold rolling exhibits excellent bend properties so that, it is capable of being bent cold around a pin under high angle without crack or fracture, due to ductile behavior. Also it can be seen that surface quality of starting materials is better than of cold rolled samples.…

This paper reports on the relative capability of the EOS M250 Extended platform to fully melt an 18Ni (‘300’ grade) maraging tool steel from sub-20 µm powder. The work describes the investigation of scanning routines necessary to achieve satisfactory metallurgical integrity and shape manufacturing capabilities of the process. Solidification was observed to take place by cellular and cellular-dendritic growth mechanisms in DMLS of the maraging steel. Intercellular spacing was less than 1 (m and this contributed to the excellent strength and hardness achieved for both as-sintered and aged material. Aging at 490(C for 6 h led to an increase in hardness and strength through the precipitation of Ni3(Mo,Ti) and Fe2Mo intermetallics. Ultimate tensile strength increased from 1101 to 1875 MPa, Vickers hardness increased from 387 to 603 kg/mm2 but elongation was reduced from 11.3 to 1.8% by aging the steel. These test results were within the tolerance specification for the material. The overall length of the test specimens was measured in the as-sintered and aged conditions. Uniformity was very high before and after the aging treatment, Shrinkage after aging was only 0.061%. The results confirmed that the maraging steel could be successfully manufactured on the M250 Extended platform.…

The material chosen for the work piece is A356 and for the dies AISI H – 26. A top die speed of 10mm/sec and a friction coefficient of 0.3 between the work piece and billet were chosen. The dies and billet were modeled to exchange heat with the ambient surroundings. The initial size of the billet was taken as 75L X 60 H X 75W. A simple shaped stepped component is to be achieved at the end of simulation. Initially the billet was placed in different positions in the die cavity and the process was simulated. After a few trials the position of the billet was finalized.…

Although water assisted injection moulding is a relatively new and advanced technique to produce hollow parts, several problems which reduce the product quality can occur. Namely, water inclusions in the wall, severe fingering and double wall defects reduce the product part stiffness. This study investigated the effect of the process parameters water volume flow rate, water injection delay time and melt temperature on the part defects to obtain a better understanding of the formation of these part defects. The effect on the residual wall thickness and the weight of the products was also investigated. Three materials were used: two polyamides and one polypropylene as a reference. The experiments were carried out on an injection moulding machine equipped with a water-injection unit to produce hollow handles. The parts were weighed before and after drying, their wall thickness was measured and their percentage of defects was calculated in order to determine the influence of the processing parameters. IR images and pressure profiles ware also used to investigate possible detection methods for part defects. It was found that all the investigated parameters have a significant influence on the residual wall thickness and part defects. Their ‘ideal’ settings depend on the material and the desired properties since small wall thicknesses and few part defects do not always…

In the international market, more than 80 tons of Mg has been used in the desulphurisation of steel and iron each year. China is the main country in producing steel and iron, and it has been predicted by experts that China needs 300,000~500,000 tons of Mg for industrial processing from now on to the year 2005. The consumption of the metal Mg has increased with an average rate of 6.6% each year during 1990s. Additionally, 109,000 tons of Mg has been consumed in making various foundry products used in automobiles, motorcycles, and electric crust etc. Some spare parts that can be fitted to automobiles like wheel hub, instrument board, chair frame, gear box, direction system, cylinder, air inlet tube and brake pedal frame have been put into use in a wild areas. The consumption of the alloy Mg in automobile-making industry will…
