The greatest resources of the world are the humans, without whom nothing could ever be a resource. Development of human resource is essential for any organization that would like to be dynamic and growth – oriented. Organizations throughout the world are realizing the fact that human assets are the most important of all assets by transformation of economic environment; information explosion; advances in technology and the intensely competitive global and domestic markets have created enormous pressure on organizations to change or perish.

Human Resource Management (HRM) is a process of bringing people and organizations together so that the goals of each are met. It is the part of the management process which is concerned with the management of human resources in an organization. Human Resource Management is an art of procuring, developing and maintaining competent workforce to achieve the goals of an organization in an effective and efficient manner. Regardless of their industry, size or location, companies’ today face five critical challenges viz., Globalization, Profitability through growth, Technology, Intellectual Capital and Change Management. PF Drucker had remarked that “man, of all the resources available to man, can grow and develop”. Their problem of establishing the right climate to maximize employee motivation and commitment is still with us. The functions of Human Resource Management include human resource planning, recruitment, selection, placement, and orientation of employees; training and career development; labour relations; management of performance appraisal, compensation, and development of personnel policies and procedures.

I.2Human Resource Management in India:

In India, Human Resource Management mostly deals with ever-changing work settings, characterized by people having varied cultural, social and religious backgrounds, diverse goals, multifarious expectations and attitudes. Over the years, employees have become more sophisticated in their demands for high quality work environments, adequate pay and benefits, proper training and career growth opportunities. A number of external and internal factors influencing the Human Resource functions in India are – Technological factors, Economic Challenges, Political factors, Social factors, Legal and Governmental Issues, Unions, Workforce diversity (external) and Mission, Policies, Organizational culture, Organizational structure and Human Resource Systems (Internal). Every leading organization is looking at developing their employees into balanced human beings in order to make them use their potential, and that offer a new set of opportunities to Human Resource in those organizations. Greater level of involvement of people in the day-to-day life of employees is becoming the norm of the day for companies, which are looking for greater commitment from employees.

I.3Dairy Development in India:

The Dairy Co-operative movement has been central to the development of dairying in India. The inspiration for this movement was the success of the Khaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union better known as AMUL. Founded in 1946 in response to the exploitation of district’s dairy farmers, Amul grew rapidly from its initial base of two societies and two hundred liters of milk. Today it is one of the most successful and the largest cooperative dairy enterprises in the whole Asia. During the last three decades, our nation’s milk producers have transformed Indian dairying from stagnation to world leadership. During this period and before, science and technology have played a critical role in supporting our farmers’ efforts. During the next decade, that role will be further enhanced as we face a number of new challenges.
