INTRODUCTION: I will be writing my book report on the short story A Message to Garcia. Elbert Green Hubbard was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he met early success as a traveling salesman with the Larkin soap company. Among his many publications were the nine-volume work Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the short story A Message to Garcia.

BODY: A Message to Garcia is a small but inspirational essay written in 1899. It tells the story of the initiative of a soldier, a class of 1881 West Point graduate. This essay exhorts the reader to apply this attitude to his or her own career and in life as an avenue to success. It starts by telling us about the conflicts growing between the United States and the Spanish, who at the time ruled Cuba. President at the time William McKinley saw a great value in establishing contact with the Cuban rebels who he thought would make a valuable ally in case of war with Spain. President McKinley asked Colonel Arthur L. Wagner to suggest a dependable officer to make contact with Calixto Garcia, one of the leaders of the rebels. Colonel Wagner suggested a man by the name of Andrew Rowan, a Captain at the time. He was assigned and accomplished a daunting mission, giving a message to Garcia. Rowan asked no questions, made no objections, requested no help, but accomplished his mission. Rowan met Garcia in the

On this speech critique, the person that I had the pleasure to critique was Javier Garcia with his speech on “What Is Engineering?” Throughout this speech critique report, I’m going to explain some of the sections that Javier covered very well and some of the sections that he needs improvement in. Also, with an explanation of why I gave him a certain score in a section and advice on how to improve upon it. I’m going to start off with the first section, out of the three, involved with the speech evaluation form.…

A Message to Garcia was written in 1899, about a message that had to be delivered to a man named Garcia who was in an unknown location in the jungles of Cuba, without hesitation or question a man by the name of Rowan delivered the message for President McKinley. The story serves more as an inspiration due to the fact that Rowan delivered the message for President McKinley and that he put the trust in Rowan to deliver it by foot without asking what, when, how long and for what reason. That same leadership and trust that President McKinley had in Rowan is what every senior subordinate in the Marine Corps should be able to put in their chain of junior Marines to get the task done without any question, and the same traits and capabilities that…

The part I found most interesting was when they were trying to find and decide who would be fit enough to carry the message to Garcia. There is not really much more research you can do on the subject of doing what you are asked to do. So the book did not make me want to research into the subject more. I would recommend this book to the Marines who have a habit of not doing what they are asked to do. Maybe this would open their eyes and get them to do what they are asked. This book would affect everyone’s life, I think. Teaches you the lesson of doing what you’re asked to do. To gain trust, respect and responsibility from others so they know that they can count on you to get the job done. So yes, this book affects my life. If you do your job, no questions ask unless need be, you won’t lose trust. You will gain the respect from your employer and fellow employees and then they can trust that you will get the job done, whether they are there or they are…

In the story “A message to Garcia,” a leader needs someone to deliver a message to another leader quickly and with no mistakes. One man accepted the task not knowing where to find this other leader and only going off of the name Garcia. Today people wonʼt just accept such a task. Instead, theyʼll question the practicality, require specifics, or ask for something in return. For instance, if an employer asks their employee to mop the floors, that employee will do one or two things, stop what theyʼre doing and immediately get it done, or finish what theyʼre doing first. If that employee didnʼt stop and immediately get the job done, then the employer would most likely find another employee to complete the simple task while the first employee finishes what they were already doing. The more valuable employee in this situation would be the one who just quickly mopped the floors with no more words then “yes sir” or “yes maʼam. A person who is willing to provide their services under any condition is someone who can “deliver a message to Garcia.”…

I believe that the mission of the author, Victor H. Krulak, Lieutenant General, USMC (Ret.), in writing this book was to describe how vital the United States Marine Corps is to our nation and that through the extensive preparation and training we receive, we have become the leading fighting force on and off the battle field. The purpose of this book was to inspire readers about the Marine Corps and to explain stories about how different equipment came into the Corps and how we perfected them. The author’s goal was the educate readers based on his personal experiences and opinions about the Marine Corps livelihood, duty and history.…

A Message to Garcia is serves as an inspiration for many reasons. Not only is it a prime example of the "no questions asked" attitude, it also makes you question yourself as a leader. Many will say that this essay is about the subordinate, but to me it envelopes the relationship of the team as a whole to accomplish the mission. Though there are many different leadership styles and principles but in my opinion the most prominent in this essay are communication, trust, and obedience.…

For my recommendation of the book I would give the book a seven out of ten. I give it a seven because at the beginning of the book it started out slow and a bit wordy when it came to the ships background but as the story progressed it became quite entertaining. It was also rewarded a seven because of the format of the book was weird in a sense because it was told through men’s diary recollections.…

In the short writing, Message to Garcia, the author Elbert Hubbard writes of a man named Rowen, who is tasked with delivering a letter to the leader of the Cuban resistance forces, General Garcia. But the story is not about his trials, or his mishaps. It's not about his journey nor his thoughts about the situation at all. The story actually mentions Rowan only a few times throughout. The author instead focuses on the qualities of Rowan, not on what he says, but, rather on what he didn't.…
