A Dogs Life
The book I read was A Dog’s Life, by Ann .M Martin. This story begins in the back yard of a family’s home, where a pregnant stray dog is looking for a safe place to give birth to her puppies. In the back yard she finds an old chicken coop that is safe and dry. She gives birth to five puppies, but only two lived. The main characters of this story are Stream (mother dog), Bone (male puppy that lived), Squirrel (female puppy that lived), and the Merrions (the family that lives in the house). The conflict in this story is Stream gives birth to Bone and Squirrel and stays with them for three months and abandons the puppies. After she does the youngest boy of the Merrions family, Matthias, finds the puppies. The puppies think that he is going to hurt them and they hide in the corner of the chicken coop. But he didn’t want to hurt them so he left for a little while and came back and fed them some left over chicken, and bought them a toy to play with. One day they saw a man with a gun that had killed a fox, and so they didn’t think it was safe and so they left the chicken coop and walked though the woods until they came to a highway. So the puppies were abandoned and the puppies wander into the woods. Later in the story Bone finds a home with an old woman, and Squirrel is left alone by herself. So then she just wanders around in the woods again, and comes to a highway and meets a dog who she thought was her brother but it wasn’t. It was another female named Moon. They became friends, and so they walk through the woods together. Further in the story Moon and Squirrel were hunting and they ran out of the woods in front of a truck and hit them both. Moon was killed on impact and only clipped Squirrel on her shoulder. In the truck there were a man, woman, little girl, and a little boy. The woman and boy went and sat next to Moon, and the girl sat next to Squirrel. The man went to get the truck to take them to the vet. At the vet, Dr. Roth

My first dog was a disaster. I’d gotten a Shih-Tzu as a seventh birthday present. She forewent obedience training and socialization. I didn’t walk her, didn’t clean up after her, and spoiled her rotten. Literally. It was unsurprising years later when she’d nipped at people unprovoked or would race around the house in a dizzying state, knocking vases off stands and knocking over unsteady chairs. Though on occasion, I found humor in her badness. The most hilarious incident being…

The puppy was symbolic in a few ways for both of the main characters. For the first main character Marie, the puppy represented a few things. Marie craved a time when her family was closer, when Goochie their current dog was still a puppy. The new puppy was going to be a way for the kids to bond and bring everyone closer. “This time was would be different, she was sure of it” (Saunders 175; Mays 175). Marie was a good mother who had a difficult upbringing and only wanted the best for her children.…

The dog soon dies and the narrator, told from the first person perspective, recounts the events of that day. After he finds the dog dead in the yard, he readily wraps him up in a tarp and buries him behind the family garden. Once back in the house, he second guesses his haste in disposing of the body. He soon returns to the burial spot and exhumes the body. With spade in hand, he sends it down on the dog’s head, releasing any doubts as to whether or not the dog was dead. The dog’s ‘revenge’ soon acts on the narrator again, this time causing him to think about what he would tell his children, and whether or not his excuse would make any sense. Once the neighbor calls informing him that there was a chance the dog could have rabies, it gave the narrator the perfect excuse to, once again, march out to the backyard and dig up the family dog.…

It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…

In lines one to three, he used imagery to introduce the dog, and to let the reader know that the newspapers on the kitchen floor were her toilet training devices. The image also conjured up a level of sympathy in the reader, lines one and two also told the reader that the dog was just a puppy therefore she was a recent addition to the family. “She must have been kicked unseen or brushed by a car. Too young to know much,” cruelty to animals is an experience that is common to both the author and many of his intended readers. There are several themes that author skillfully weaved into the piece. The obvious themes are; death, love and loss as portrayed in lines fourteen and fifteen, “And my wife called in a voice imperious with tears. Though surrounded by love that would have upheld her,” Love in this case wa s not enough to resurrect their dead dog.…

My family dog is a hairless Chinese Crested named Sid. He is a gray, white, and black dog with no hair except on his head, paws, and the tip of his tail. We rescued Sid 8 years ago from Detroit, Michigan. His owners left him outside in the freezing cold when they moved away. They abandoned him. Adopting Sid changed my life forever. By caring for him, I have learned loyalty, responsibility, love, compassion, and patience. These are traits I see and feel within him as well. I believe animals mirror God’s hope and love for us. For example, God wants us to forgive others who have done us harm. Sid has forgiven his original owners by moving beyond the shy and fearful dog he was when we first brought him home. He is a happy and joyful dog now.…
