This book has a wealth of information that readers will defiantly be able to use to further his or her own speaking ability, the main point of public speaking was summed up in one sentence, “above and beyond other factors, a good speech is on that achieves its COMMUNICATIVE purpose” (Motley, 1997, p.…
The first step is confidence. When combining self confidence with fast talking, your audience will struggle in finding flaws in your argument and will be forced to agree with you. Confidence is also synonyms with expertise. Once others believe that you is actual fact, they will think that you are right and will follow you. You will achieve true confidence when you also believe what know and believe what you say.…
I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still…
A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone. There were others in the class that were as bad or worse than I was at delivering speeches. After the initial speech my confidence for myself grew as I prepared for the speeches throughout the…
“Public speech is the most valuable skill you can learn.” That’s the line that seems to start every awards ceremony spiel, every college essay, every application for speech captainship...oh hey, look. But despite the popularity of this idea, I feel there is a distinction to be made between the value of public speaking, and the value of being on the Neuqua Valley Speech Team. Over two years, I’ve learned that being a part of this team is more than just learning how to act, write, or prep a broadcast – it’s about learning how to connect with people, both in rounds and in real life. It is about responsibility and commitment to something greater than yourself. It is about striving to bring out the best in people. It is about discovering who you are through teamwork and collaboration, and I want next year’s novices to understand that. As a captain, I know that I can go beyond simply carrying out tasks and…
I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…
A beauty pageant is a competition that is based solely on physical attributes but often includes talent, personality and question and answer portions. Most beauty pageants are made for women especially young girls at the age of five. Although beauty pageants are seemingly harmless and just provokes the competitive side of women, it should not be welcomed to young girls at age ten and below because (a) beauty pageants set their own definition of what is beautiful, (b) it may affect their future outlook in life, and (c) it is a form of abuse to young girls.…
In chapter 50 of the Speak With Courage textbook I learned to Set a goal, and then set out to achieve that goal. Going right along with this I also learned that on the day you speak, as the person you are, with the skills, knowledge, and aptitudes you possess, do the best you can and let it go. Personally, I often become overwhelmed that people will not like my speech because I am not the most talented or gifted student at strategically and efficiently expressing myself. Other times I feel like I am competing with my sister for the best speech performance. After reading these tremendous chapters in the Speak With Courage textbook I feel a renewed sense of motivation to not compare myself to others. I also find it helpful to go into each speech…

Now, I mentor two new Debate Club teams, including people who – like me – dreaded public speaking. This experience taught me not to regret decisions before seeing their full effects, and that the shackles that are stained with most blood and tears are those that we put on ourselves – invisible, preventing us from reaching our full potential. From this simple moment I got far more than an expressive demeanor: I became a part of a community, the Debate Club; I grew as a person, became eager to share knowledge and abilities with larger groups of people than…
Americans today tend to believe that public speaking is an effortless fear to overcome. Nevertheless, I had a whole different experience with conquering this challenge. It took numerous attempts, many hours of speaking to myself, and a stutter of words. But without it, I wouldn’t have known the confidence and courage I had in me.…

It was 8:15am on a Thursday morning and I woke up anxious to what we would do that day. I awoke, brushed my teeth, put on the clothes I picked out the night before, and glanced at the mirror, not thinking twice about what I looked like. I was too eager to go to school, but for the track meet we had that day. I rushed into the classroom, passed the morning chatter, and headed straight to my assigned seat, excited for the day. My mind then jumped to the array of events I could possibly do. I had thought too much of what my teammates might think, and it made me nervous that I had to try something new. But looking back through the process, really not knowing that I could see my talent had given me confidence because I had nothing to worry about.…
