Benchmarking may have negatives, but there are ways to correct them. In a benchmarking study, the United Kingdom was surveyed for problems and how benchmarking could be used to remedy these problems. There were difficulties in finding suitable partners, resource constraints, which included time, finance, and expertise, staff resistance, and at least half of the organizations surveyed experienced problems in comparing data (Limited & Massey). Furthermore, when the respondents were asked why they were not getting involved in benchmarking, they replied with: they were ignoring it, there were too many resource constraints, the data comparability was incorrect, their workforce size was too small to gain anything from it, or benchmarking was not appropriate for them (Limited & Massey).
One great advantage of benchmarking is overcoming “paradigm blindness” (SlideShare Inc. & KenHeitritter). Paradigm Blindness is “the way we do it [now] is best because it is the way we’ve always done it” (SlideShare Inc. & KenHeitritter). This paradigm blindness helps businesses to grow and advance in their markets because it promotes market awareness and innovation without incorporating other competing company’s techniques.
Benchmarking is very helpful in at least these four different and effective ways: improving performance by identifying methods of improvement in operational efficiency and product design, understanding relative cost position and identifying opportunities for improvement, gaining strategic advantage by helping companies focus on capabilities critical to building strategic advantage, and increasing the rate of organizational learning by bringing in new ideas which facilitate experience sharing (Bane & Company).
Global Benchmarking cannot bring about change in a market if the best price leaders do not follow the regulations. The best price leaders use organizational leadership to coordinate, communicate, motivate, and delegate among employees and

Benchmarking is defined as the process of comparing the cost, cycle time, productivity, or quality of a specific process or method to another that is widely considered to be an industry standard or best practice (O’Neill, Dam, Gutbezahl, n.d.). Benchmarking is a great tool used to monitor productivity and profitability. A successful physical therapy department needs to be running efficiently in all areas, including employee productivity, correct charging and collections and the use of support staff as well as the therapists (Edgar, 2011). Benchmarking can help show you the problem areas of the department that may need attention and reorganizing thus improving productivity and profitability.…

    Armco

The old performance measurement system used by Armco Inc did not work properly because it had some problems. First, it did not provide information on the product mix being produced while it provided data on total tonnage produced but didn’t breakdown what was produced. Second the measurement system compared actual to objective but didn’t provide data on what factors exactly caused variance. Third, the costs were not broken down by fixed costs, variable costs and relevant range. Also the reports were generated on the 15th day following every month ending so I think managers could not take immediate corrective actions which would have been sometimes very necessary. In my opinion, also the fact that the system did not measure Key Performance Index for each department such as the new system, is one important reason why the old system was inadequate. Even if the operating managers liked the old system, the new system was necessary. The operating managers may have liked the old system probably because it is understandable that no one likes to be moved out of their familiar comfort zone after many years. In my opinion the greatest weakness of the old system is that the data it provides isn’t clear enough and it is quite difficult to read and understand properly.…
