yellow wall paper symbolism
Yellow In The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, several symbols are used to show the oppression of women by men and the struggle against that male dominated society. While numerous symbols could be cited from the text to support this, there are three predominant symbols throughout the story that explain the woman’s suffrage theme. The yellow wallpaper itself is symbolic of the mental screen that men attempted to place on women. The color yellow is often associated with sickness or weakness, and the writer’s mysterious illness is a symbol of man’s oppression of the female sex. The two windows from which the writer often peers out of, observing the world but apart from it, is representative of the possibilities of women if seen as equals by the opposite sex. The story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was interesting with deep symbolicpoints. The story starts out with John and his wife moving to a colonial estate for the summer. Meanwhile, the woman finds the mansion to be “a haunted house” and still she thought it had something “queer” about it. This estate and her environment have much to do with this woman’s fate. The woman just had a baby, so most of her depression could come from this big event in her life but the baby is only mentioned a few times near the beginning of the story. After she settles in the new house, the yellow wallpaper starts to bother her, which is a key turning point in this woman’s life. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is symbolic for the main character’s sanity and her entrapment, physically and mentally. Another symbol is the narrator's writings in her notebook and the notebook itself. Both represent the narrator's attempt to have normalcy and sanity during this horrible ordeal of being locked in her room. Despite being told by her husband that he wants to limit the amount of time she uses to write, she continues to write more

Lives for women in 1892 were heavily controlled by men. Women were treated as if they were inferior to men. Charlotte Perkins Gilman brings light to this problem in a interesting way. Gilman herself, was in fact driven to near madness and later claimed to have written “The Yellow Wallpaper” to protest this treatment of women like herself, and specifically to address her physician. Although they never replied to Gilman personally, they are said to have confessed to a friend that they had changed their treatment of hysterics after reading the story. While real life aspects are apparent it’s the symbolism and subliminal feminist in her story to show how a woman’s role in society is limited with no control or creative outlet.…

“The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman engages the audience into the inner self of a young mother and wife throughout the story. The story has grown from a remedy to depression to a female defiance to a male society. Gilman’s purpose in writing “The Yellow Wallpaper” shows the courage a woman had to demonstrate a positive change in her self-identity and free her from the social, domestic, and psychological confinement that were placed on women in the 1800’s. By writing the story from a first-person feministic point of view the narrator shows the struggle of women’s independence and individuality in a male dominated society through gender stereotype that exist between the society and the protagonist in “The Yellow Wallpaper.”…

Symbolism, in many aspects, can affect humans as well as characters in a negative or positive way. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” it is obvious that the symbol that is used, being the yellow wallpaper, affects the narrator in a negative way. As the story progresses and the narrator is forced to stay in the room covered in yellow wallpaper, she starts to gain a sense of who she is as well as a sense of self-expression. Suffering from her illness, the narrator is secluded from everyone and as time passes the wallpaper starts to come to life and causes her harm. As the narrator looks more and more into the wallpaper, she starts to notice the different types of delicate patterns in which lead her to seeing women behind the wallpaper. She starts to feel as if she has legitimately been isolated and can’t help but see people behind the yellow wallpaper. “Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over. Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and in the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard “(Gilman 487). Having the narrator see women from the wallpaper goes to show the reader that she is becoming delusional as time goes by, and soon her actions play a role in deciding to rip off the wallpaper off. The reader can definitely understand that the narrator is aware that she does have an illness that has affected her in multiple ways now, but does not want to accept how insane she truly has…

In “ The Yellow Wallpaper” by Gilman, an important symbol is the Yellow Wallpaper, which represents the unknown woman’s illness and life. Throughout the story as the woman’s mental health gets worse, the wallpaper pattern gets more unbearable. She becomes obsessed with the atrocious pattern, and repulsing color. When the narrator and her husband arrive at the mansion, she knows she is depressed but nothing too serious. And when she first sees the wallpaper, she thinks it’s disturbing, but she can handle it. The narrator says, “ It slaps you in the face, knocks you down, and tramples upon you. It is like a bad dream.” The narrator is using personification to express how the wallpaper is almost abusing her and how she has no control over it.…

The Yellow Wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman explores the oppression of women in the nineteenth century and how this led to the limitation of freedom, leading to confinement of many women during this time. It illustrates the male superiority over the female and the elimination of a voice and a say for these women regarding their own lives. The short story is structured to appear a bit creepy and horrific, but within this method the author created a strong female character who, even though is slowly deteriorating psychologically, is trying to fight the pressure that society in the nineteenth century is placing on her and also the pressure of her own husband. The style that the author was trying to create is clear through her use…

On my first reading of Charlotte Perkins Gilman 's "The Yellow Wallpaper", I found the short story extremely well done and the author, successful at getting her idea across. Gilman 's use of imagery and symbolism only adds to the reality of the nameless main character 's sheltered life and slow progression into insanity or some might say, out of insanity.…

It was written during early-to-mid nineteenth century positions female imprisonment within domestic sphere. The narrator sets the wallpaper as a symbol of protagonist state of the mind. In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” one example of symbolism in the story is the bars on the windows. Jane is being locked and left alone in a small room to cure her insanity. The bars on the windows show how Jane feels on the inside. Emotionally, Jane feels that she is very sick and that her husband does not believe her. Jane feels that she is locked inside the room and that is not helping cure her sickness. In the text it states, “I am getting angry enough to do something desperate. To jump out of the window would be admirable exercise, but the bars are too strong to even try” (Gilman). Jane wants to escape the house because she feels trapped inside. The bars on the window give a sense of Jane being seriously captured in the room. Bars are mainly used to keep something not escaping from the inside. The bars prevented Jane from escaping out the window. The bars on…

In society, it is very common to see individuals suffer from depression disorders. “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman portrays a woman who goes mentally insane after giving birth to her baby. While staying at an estate during the summer, he confines her to one room in the home, and is unable to do anything she loves. Rao argues that the wallpaper is one dynamic symbol, which is quickly evident throughout. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman defies gender roles in the nineteenth century, by using the main character to show women need a creative outlet, to work, and not conform to the idealistic type of woman in the nineteenth century. She also shows this story is not specifically about one family by using generic names such as John and Mary (Ford 309). The use of these unspecific names suggests that Gilman is using the story to encompass all women and not just the main character of the story that is undergoing these persecutions (Ford 309). Throughout the story, the main character is trapped in a room with horrid yellow wallpaper. that her husband said he would change it out when they first rented the house, but now has no intention to. He believes that living with something she isn’t fond of will do her some good in recovery (Gilman “Yellow” 794). At first the yellow wallpaper has little meaning other than the fact that the main character hates it and almost refuses to…
