Has had a ranking of #1 in concert tours? Played in the shadow of the Parthenon, the Forbidden City and the Taj Mahal? Believe it or not! This inspiring composer who holds these and many other musical triumphs is Yanni.
Yanni was born in 1954 in a pictures village on the coast of Greece. Yanni was born into the Greek, Chryssomallis family. Yanni had an older brother and a younger sister. Yanni was a typical kid with a typical childhood. Yanni was a young boy growing up in the 1960’s within Greece. You know went swimming, fishing, and of course went to school. What child doesn’t? In his early years he was a member of Greek National swimming team, he shattered the record for the men’s 50-meter freestyle event at the age of 14 (Face Book, Yanni). Now that is truly amazing.
Yanni began at the age of six to teach himself to play the piano. He refused structurally formal music/piano lessons. All he says he could remember was that he wanted to make the music from the radio and the movies come from the piano. He performed for his family member.
Yanni has a love for his homeland, which inspired his first compositions of his music. No one would think to leave such a thrilling country on the shores of the Mediterranean, except for Yanni. In 1972 at the age of 18 his parents encouraged him to leave his native country to attend the University of Minnesota. Yanni embraced this momentous change by not only studying, but also furthering his music by playing in a local Rock and Roll Band (Yanni Biography).
