In the coming weeks, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting in Oak Lawn, Senior Fairs in Chicago and Lockport, and a Veterans Fair in Bridgeview.

At the Town Hall Meeting, Third District residents will be able to hear from Rep. Lipinski about his work on their behalf at home and in Washington, as well as ask questions and voice their opinions on federal issues. Staff from the Congressman's office will be available beginning one hour prior to the start of the meeting to provide assistance with Medicare, Social Security, veterans' benefits, and other federal matters.

The Senior Fairs will give area residents an opportunity to get assistance with a variety of issues from the Congressman's expert staff, as well as local organizations, agencies, and businesses that provide services to seniors. During the Veterans Fair, Rep. Lipinski's staff will be joined by other organizations to assist veterans with questions regarding military personnel and medical records, veterans' claims and benefits, medals earned but not received, and other VA related issues.

"I want to personally extend an invitation to the residents of the Third Congressional District to my upcoming Town Hall Meeting, Senior Fairs and Veterans Fair," said Rep. Lipinski. Luis Chavez is an upstanding young man who was also one of the most inspiring teenagers I had ever met in my life. I had the pleasure of working with Luis while I was employed with City Year Chicago, an AmeriCorps program. Luis had done volunteer service with City Year’s Young Heroes Program for years as a middle school student. In 2008, he joined the City Heroes Program, the high school equivalent of Young Heroes, during my term as a Senior Corps Member and Program Leader for City Heroes. Not only was Luis a consistent participant, he was a leader among his peers. He met with us weekly to plan activities and contribute…

The prime motivation for congressmen is reelection. With re-election comes power and strategy. In Richard Fenno’s reading, Home Style and Washington Career, he examines the goals and strategies of congressmen. The two main aspects covered are a congressman’s establishment of a home style and their career in Washington. The home style of a congressman is how they handle their districts or states. Their career in Washington relates to how they serve their elective communities at a higher level. If congressmen want to keep getting reelected, they must find a balance between the two. Finding the perfect balance will keep the voters happy at home and, therefore, ensure reelection. Those who are unable to find a balance will have short lived political careers. In Home Style and Washington…

I would like to invite you to be a panelist on Thursday, June 16th for Corps Member Induction. The panel will take place at the Grandview Library (500 W. Main St.) from 1:30 - 2:15. The week starts off with teachers sharing their own story of self, and then hearing the story of the Teach For America region and its values and priorities. Apart from the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian Club, I have volunteered with various other organizations such as the Red Cross, Moore Food and Resource Center and the OCARTA Wellness Hub. I have chosen to dedicate my time to these community service activities because I know that a small effort can go a big way in changing other's lives. Along with community service activities, I have also dedicated my time within my Latino community. I have attended numerous leadership conferences aimed at Hispanic students, including the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference at the Oklahoma City University and the TREE Conference at the University of Oklahoma. I was also selected to attend the Latinos Without Borders Fall Camp at the University of Oklahoma. Attending all of these events have changed my life, because I have learned how to fight the barriers that plague my community and culture. It is important to me to be involved within my cultural community because I believe in order for a community to prosper, its members have to become aware of the problems within their community and work to better…

Since the First United States Congress meeting in 1789 to Current meetings in Capital building there has been speculation about how functional Congress is. Whether someone thinks Congress is Dysfunctional like Ezra Klein, or they are trying to defend Congress like Lee H. Hamilton, it has to be understood that Congress is a very complex institution that has its ups and its downs. Although in the past 100 years congress has been more dysfunctional than functional. A man who has been working his entire life to improve the United States left Congress, he left because he felt like he wasn’t serving the society anymore. Bayh decided because congress is so dysfunctional that he would rather leave and work in a job that directly affected society…

On October 12th I volunteered in union with the Multicultural Center at the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, the apex of a series of events that took place across Hispanic Heritage Month, helping to educate the campus about Hispanic culture. The celebration took place in the Galaxy rooms in the SU from 7to 9pm which featured a talent show, a country flag display, a mariachi performance, a poetry recitation, followed by a traditional cultural meal. I chose to volunteer at this event because I have always been a strong promoter of diversity and these events provide an outlet for cultural expression and educating the student body about different cultures. During the celebration I was responsible for greeting/signing in guest at the and…
