Xiaomi, Xiaomi killers and impact on the supply chain

Research Analyst

The huge success of Xiaomi smartphones (especially Hongmi Note) has led all tier-one Chinese smartphone vendors to launch similar “high-spec mid-price” devices that aim to be Xiaomi killers in the market. These devices have been selling strongly, and cannibalizing global OEMs’ mid/low-end smartphones in
China. In our coverage universe, we believe Largan, FIH Mobile, AAC
Acoustics, Mediatek (covered by Jessica Chang) and TSMC (covered by
Michael Chou) are key beneficiaries of this trend.

How do these phones achieve such good cost-performance ratio?
These phones generally feature a 5”+ display, an 8-core AP, 13MP/5MP front/rear cameras, and a high-capacity battery (see Figure 1), but are retailed at ~RMB1000 (~USD160). At first glance, their specs are at par with global brands’ flagship devices, which are often retailed at USD600 or higher.
However, a close look at their cost structure (see Figure 2) suggests that they use downgraded APs, TFT displays, memory, camera modules, and mechanical components in a clever way that general consumers might not perceive as a downgrade. For example, they use cheaper Mediatek 8-core AP to replace the pricy Qualcomm S800 4-core AP (used by global brands). Most consumers will intuitively prefer the 8-core AP to the 4-core AP but won’t notice that the overall performance of the Qualcomm AP is better. The adoption of Mediatek’s total solution also helps to save peripheral semiconductor costs (baseband, WiFi/BT/GPS, power management,

Profits from low-cost plans are barely keeping them afloat in an industry where evolving technology is vital for sustainability. Smart-phones continue to be the current and future cash crop of the cell phone industry. The best companies like AT&T, and Verizon offer reliable 4G network technologies, along with multimedia phones, that allow expeditious travel of data. Conversely, T-Mobile and Metro PCS are still operating on older network protocols and selling a lineup of smart-phones that are very lackluster when compared to the competitions iPhone, and Android.…

With the rapid evolution of telephony in the past few years, many wireless chipset manufacturing plants have confronted challenges adapting to the emerging market trends. In 2009, MediaTek took the fabless semiconductor market by surprise, capitalizing on roughly a third of the sales of the entire market. Although, as the marketplace evolved, so did technological innovation in the field, leaving Mr. Tsai, the CEO of MediaTek, with a great dilemma. Tsai confronts great challenges in attracting tier-one companies (I.E Nokia, Motorola, or Samsung) to purchase MediaTek’s product, due to major competitors in the industry. Currently, MediaTek is indirectly a mass supplier of chipsets to the Shanzhai (counterfeit) market. Tsai is sceptical of the company’s future in this market segment due to its uncertain characteristics and unforeseeable evolution, and is thus contemplating shifting to the more rigid market segment; tier-one brands.…

After all the only thing that will separate Target form other chains like Wal-Mart and other discount chains is the ability to deliver the perception of value to the consumer. Value is the only bargaining chip that they have. Most of them will sell the same products but it is the perception of value that makes the difference in whether or not the consumer will purchase the products. Most of the time consumers will make their purchases from a need that has to be filled but quite a few time they will do what is called impulse buying. They will see an item and they just have to have it at that time. Retailers will act upon this and then place items that are attracted to impulse in areas of the store so that consumers will act upon…
