The Importance of a Flood Free and Clean Living Community
Background :

The residents of Purok 5, Fellings Village, John Bosco District particularly in our area who are living near the riverbank or one of the low lying villages in the city, which is 3rd class city in the province of Surigao del Sur, Mindanao that had always been experiencing floods due to the rising of the river waters in that area. It has been, observed that even just a slight rain fall; flood occurs and brings devastation to the houses, and to the people especially rainy seasons. As one of the resident of our Purok, I already witnessed how my neighbors suffered from this problem. They always, evacuate and after that clean their houses and lastly repair what has been damaged from the flood. In fact, houses there were built in high story style to avoid floods coming to their houses.

As a concern citizen, it really encourages me to help the people. That is why, there is a need to create a program that will help and lessen the burden of the people living in that area. There is a need to spread awareness and promote disciplinary action through planning and making a proposal that will solve the old and same problems experienced by the people in our area. A program that will inset active community participation through voluntary work, for this program will let the people see the importance of a flood free and a clean living community. Problem :

The number one problem in our community is flood. This problem is not new to the people in the community because it has been experienced several years ago and yet there is no solution being made. Problem is, people are not responsible enough in proper waste management, especially to the settlers near the river bank. Before, there are trees planted beside the river but now, it 's nowhere to be found but houses replacing the trees.

That is why when heavy rain fall came, rivers raise its waters and flood the people in the community. You can observe garbage floating in the water, worst is it

One issue that I can relate to and understand is the overdevelopment. Many real estate developers are destroying the land around and possibly affecting the water too. Salt marshes and mangrove swamps are examples of coastal habitats being damaged. I see these builders over building and have not care for the negative impact it will have on our water resources. We as humans and as creatures of mother earth have an obligation to take care of what limited resources we have. It is apparent today that the more we build and over populate, we will destroy the natural resources and create long term problems. Just imagining the materials and debris being set forth around the real estate is being developed is utterly disturbing. These real estate developments…

Water pollution has become a major problem in our water sources. People think that when they litter or dump in our waters that their little contribution will not hurt anything, but everyone’s little contributions add up to some major problems. Our water ecosystems and the species that reside in them are being destroyed and we need to take the steps necessary to stop this. Why would anyone use the source of most of the world’s food as a dumping ground for garbage? People need to start realizing what it is they are doing when they do not take the proper steps to dispose of their garbage and the problems they are making for the future.…

Flooding has been a continual issue since the first settlers arrived in America. Using methods to deter and/or collect water protects the communities living in that area, but proper maintenance to those barriers must be ensured. Without proper maintenance to these infrastructures, levees can break, dams can crack or collapse leaving disaster behind. Hurricane Katrina’s faulty levees reveal the extreme consequences of neglecting these protectors in places where people depend on them (Wenger, 247). There were many devastating disasters that prompted new analysis and evaluation on flooding conditions and methods to reduce damage and cost. Flood insurance was established for areas that are located within the floodplain (302), as well as the…

Hurricane Katrina was a devastating disaster, which killed more than 1,800 people, engendered the displacement of thousands of people, and occasioned severe damaged to properties (Russell, 2015). According to the same source, more than 80% of New Orleans was flooded during the event in 2005. The geomorphologic situation of the city (altitude -1m, location on the bank of the Mississippi River), and the protection barriers failure are the main sources of its vulnerability. The reconstruction of many of the city’s infrastructures started, and most of them are at the stage of finishing 10 years after the impact of the incident (Russell, 2015). The reconstruction of the city was necessitated by the unwillingness of the city’s natives to move definitely…

Our drinking water needs to be protected. It takes the help of the community, public water systems and resource managers. We can do small things such as posting signs in our community to let others know that any pollution in the area can contaminate our everyday drinking water. You can also be careful as to how much fertilizers and pesticides you use because the more you use, the more runs off when it rain and it is in the soil as well so when the rain washes the soil, it flows through storm drains. A great plan is to get a group together and help clean up along local rivers and streams and along side of the road. It helps to limit the trash and bacteria that contaminates our water.…

The stench carries for miles causing coughing and headaches; no one wants to be anywhere near the affected neighborhood because of the smell and bacteria. There’s the danger of contamination, loss of property values and health risks. The cause is raw sewage. Even though it’s an expensive fix, this problem could have been prevented if county engineers had done a better job of planning. Flood-related pollution is a huge issue because it presents such health risks to residents.…

People throw things carelessly, which can block the canals and rivers, making them polluted and hard to maintain.
