I’ll be honest, English wasn’t and still isn’t one of my strong points in my education. During my high school years, my essays had suffered partly due to the fact that my grammar and organization of ideas weren’t consistent with the structure. That is, my ideas would abruptly change from topic to topic with no overall flow at all. Lacking experience in writing and reading, English was my most challenging subject. I despised writing. I felt that the subject was useless. The writing compartment in my brain was extremely restricted. I lacked flexibility in the use of words and phrases. I had the vocabulary of an elementary student. A typical sentence of mine would start with "I", "It", "Because", "The", "But", "Therefore". It is extremely difficult for me to receive the grade I wanted on my essays. My grades had suffered as a result, and I would always be looked down upon by my teachers. I remember one particular teacher with the name of Ms. Sidle. I have heard horror stories from former students of her class. The way she grades essays is the epitome of strictness. People have called her cold hearted, and the grades she hands out reflect just that. When junior year arrived, I was in for a nightmare, as I was scheduled into her class. I winged the class, but barely. I asked for help from all my resources (students and other teachers as well). Even though I had passed the class, I didn’t pay much attention to the subject, as I was occupied with just trying to pass the class. I do understand that her teaching methods are strict because they should help you when you enter the real world, but too strict is another thing of its own. Because of the lasting image she left us when we passed her class, my mindset was changed. I disliked high school. I thought of it as a huge waste of my time. All I was focused on was getting into college, and focusing more towards my major. Hey, as long as I am able to speak and write perfectly fine enough to get my point carried across, I was fine right? Unfortunately, this was not the correct mindset to have. I realized that many of the lawyers and the reports created for companies are anywhere from ten pages to over a hundred, outlining the viewpoints and arguments that the courts use. Recently, I read up on the lawsuit filed by the justice department towards the AT&T and T-Mobile acquisition. AT&T countered the lawsuit with a twenty-five page report. This made me wonder and ponder upon my current English skills. Just how are they able to put their points and positions into a huge twenty five page report? I was baffled, yet length is what gives majority of lawsuits the winning advantage. Laying out all the points to the complete maximum closes most of the loopholes and exploits that can be cross-examined and countered by the opposing party. As I researched more and more on the reports and the structure behind the legal documents, I became more and more impressed at the work that individuals can put out. Expanding further into journals and documents that news anchors and reporters compose, the grammar and organization is just phenomenal. In the professional world, my viewpoint was just completely wrong. Thinking that college would be an investment in my future, I now believe that I should treat English with more emphasis, because even a simple thing such as a resume for job applications can and probably will have a huge impact on my chances of being hired by employer. I just hope that going through college’s English composition 1 and 2 will help me develop my skills in writing essays in the long run.

    Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way.     In the passage Death to high school English, written by Kim Brooks, explains the thoughts of a college professor who teaches composition, and is dealing with students who do not know how to write at all. Brooks story is told in first person, simply because she experienced it firsthand. The tone of this passage seemed to be mostly frightening because Brooks was in shock at how terrible the writing was and had to put a stop to it and make a change. Another tone that was noticeably present in the text was disbelieving. Disbelieving was definitely present because Brooks was in complete disbelief, disbelief in how students at this age and experience still do not know how to properly write. “I’ve begun to wonder if this typical high school English class, dividing its curriculum between standardized tests preparation and the reading of canonical texts, might occupy a central place in the creation of a generation of college students who, simply put, cannot write” (Brooks). Brooks writes with an annoyed tone, and a very powerful vocabulary which helps her back up her point very specifically.     My writing process has greatly changed throughout the course of this class. Starting at the beginning in August, I came into class rather cocky. I did not take the time to go over all of Dr. Trollinger’s comments on my rough draft and make multiple drafts. I was a victim of extreme procrastination.     Personally, I believe that I need guidance in the basics of writing: organizing, grammar, editing, etc. In high school, I met a variety of English teachers. My ninth grade English teacher was mostly a supervisor because she would first hand out magazines then make us summarize what we read.     At this point I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life after college and I didn’t even know what college I wanted to go to.     My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay.
