1. Answer these “Before Reading” questions: (Turn this in with Reading Response—can be handwritten)
Read the introduction to the essay on page 641. Define “apartheid.” Skim the rest of the text. What is the general topic?
Consider what you already know about the topic. What was your high school like? What about other schools you know/have heard about through friends or the media?
2. Read/annotate: Jonathan Kozol, “Fremont High School,” pp. 641–648.
3. Write a Reading Response to “Fremont High School.” (1 – 2 pages typed) Instructions:
Answer “Engaging with the Text” questions 1–4 on p. 648.
Provide the dictionary definition of an interesting word that appears in the excerpt.
4. Pick a topic for Essay 1, and email me for approval by midnight Sunday.

Review prewriting activities to generate ideas and text (NFG 219-223) PPT
HW:
1. Pre-research questions (based on prewriting): see assignment sheet Steps 2 and 3
2. Do a prewriting activity to generate ideas and text. See NFG pp. 219-22. You will turn this in with your final draft.
3. Find and read/annotate at least four outside sources.
4. Create a Working Plan/Outline including Working Thesis Statement for Essay 1(assignment sheet Steps 5 and 6).
Day 2

Discuss Essay Development—Introduction, paragraph development and structure. (PPT)
