World War 2

I interviewed my grandparents Robert and Catherine Williams at their home. During the war both my grandfather and grandmother were little kids. . My grandparents stayed in Charlotte, North Carolina during the war. Neither one of their parents were involved in the war. Both of their parents had jobs.
Whether you were part of one of the richest families or just an average middle class family, that didn’t matter during the period of World War 2. The rules were the same for everyone in the society. The hardships were almost the same for everyone in the neighborhood, and their home lives were descent for both adults and children.
The needs for families were what any family would need to survive. There was food needed, clothes to wear, gas to be put in cars , and shoes to save your feet. The only thing that was different was how you purchased these items. The people couldn’t just go and pay for it with cash. Instead they had to have stamps to get their needs. This was one of the major hardships at the time. It was very difficult to get stamps. People go up to whatever store that had what they needed with great amounts of money and the store owners would refuse it. All anybody wanted was the stamps. The only thing that you were pretty much able to get without stamps were shoes. But the shoes were so cheap if you got them wet they would fall apart. If you wanted the good shoes you would have to own some stamps to get them. In my grandmother’s words “money was just plain pitiful.”
The jobs that were offered for men and women were pretty descent. There was this really popular place in Charlotte called the Shareplant. Everyone wanted to get a job there because it was one of the nicer places to work that offered some of the most descent pay and descent hours. That’s were both of my grandfathers parents worked. He was lucky to see his parents as much as he did compared to the other kids in his neighborhood whose parents worked long into the night. For... [continues]
