Descriptive essay about the root causes of World War I World War 1 was the first war in modern history that exploded onto the global theatre. An analysis of the prevailing conditions among the key actor-states now reveals that the relatively underdeveloped condition of global economic, political and social systems was the primary cause of the conflagration. A lack of systems to address many of the problems bedevilling the global community prior to the commencement of hostilities in Europe manifests in the actions of the great powers of the time. Firstly, a backward medieval mentality hampered international relations leading countries to group themselves into blocs aimed at securing short-term advantages. The idea of a supranational community of states was not a reality and had to wait until after the war to be realised in the League of Nations, the failed forerunner of today’s United Nations. The consequence of this poor diplomatic atmosphere was the creation of numerous strategic alliances among the great powers of the day that included the UK, the US, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a result, there was an increase in Strategic alliances, Militarism and Nationalism. Secondly, international economic blocs such as the World Trade Organisation were unimaginable at the time.
