An international library supported Unesco and the U.S. Library of Congress went on online in a project called the World Digital Library, “which aims to promote international and intercultural understanding”.   The site, which is located at ,   contains material from more than 30 national libraries and other national institutions, to digitally archive cultural material.
The site contains links to material from all 192 Unesco members, and has incorporated material of great historical importance but has not included any copyrighted material.   The project has received $3 million in funding from Google, which is part of the $10 million project budget, which have been funded by various other national organizations.   The project is running concurrently with the European Commission’s project, Europeana, “which gathers material from European libraries, museums, audiovisual archives and other institutions”.   Europeana, “with about five million items, has a far broader range of material than the World Digital Library, with about 1,250 objects”.
Along with the World Digital Library, Europeana, Google has started its own mission, to scan millions of books and make them available online, in the digital form.   None of these projects were meant to compete with each other but rather, work cooperatively with each other and other national organizations to create an international digital database, full of materials ranging from books, audio and visual files, maps, any and all material they can get their hands on to create the largest digital database. The projects are open to all organizations to join and give their own input, and materials, which would be provided to the public.
Since the focus of this project is technology and advancing our knowledge, the United States is stepping back from its individualism and working together with other countries.
