. Success of any organization ultimately depends on the knowledge, skill, attitude, motivation, experience & hard-work of its human resources. Training Need Identification is done to find out the kinds of training that are needed and which methods will best deliver the needed skill, knowledge, attitude to the workers.

If productivity targets are not met consistently a signal is given to managers and HR staff that training is needed.An analysis of training needs is an essential pre-requisite to the design of effective training.Training need identification is the responsibility of line managers as well as HR department who determine these needs by careful observation of performance and regular discussions with the staff, and provide the necessary information to ascertain these developmental needs and to meet them by career planning as far as operational demands will permit.The success of TNI process largely depends on the organizational support and the person leading the team to achieve the success. Differences are to be ironed out, misunderstandings are to be cleared and adoption of “We vs. They” attitude should be discouraged. If not done this may lead to lack of trust and result in wrong assessment thus making training ineffective. After the above stage is achieved a liaison team can be formed. This team may suggest the individuals who should participate, the means to explain the process and the level of trust necessary to accomplish a successful needs assessment. As the liaison team services critical functions, the team is to be chosen very carefully.

Training needs arise at three levels:
1. Organizational Level
2. Group Level
3. Individual Level

The training need identification is an essential requirement to the design of effective training. The purpose of training need analysis is to determine whether there is a gap between what is required for effective performance and present level of performance.

Why training need analysis?
Training need analysis is conducted to determine whether resources required are available or not. It helps to plan the budget of the company, areas where training is required, and also highlights the occasions where training might not be appropriate but requires alternate action.

Training Need arises at three levels: Corporate need and training need are interdependent because the organization performance ultimately depends on the performance of its individual employee and its sub group.

Training Need Identification at Cummins starts with the help of Performance Appraisal, where the performance appraisal is done by Head of Department (himself) of the individuals or group of staff members or employees.

This is done so as to observe that which training is needed to the group. The training activity is mainly conducted for the group of members where they are found to be weak or having lack of knowledge.
