CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study Farming has been the main source of income of our country for years. However agricultural production was never as easy as ABC. Farmers and agriculturists tend to go through real hard work and toil in assuring crop yield because of pests which harm crops. One perfect example of these pests are the mollusks from the Ampullariidae family which in vernacular are usually called golden kuhol (golden apple snails). In the 1980s, Golden Apple Snails (Pomacea canaliculata) were introduced in Taiwan to start an escargot industry. It was thought that such food culture could provide valuable proteins for farmers, who primarily live on a rice diet. However, the snails did not become a culinary success. Instead of becoming a valuable food source, the introduced snails escaped and became a serious threat to rice production and the native ecosystems. During the 1980s the introduced snails rapidly spread to many countries including the Philippines. In order to minimize and altogether optimistically stop the dreadful reproduction of golden apple snails, the use of molluscicides and killing medicines must be done. This study was conducted to evaluate the molluscicidal effect of Neem Leaf (Azadirachta Indica) ethanolic extract against Golden Apple Snails (Pomacea canaliculata).

Objectives of the Study Generally, this study will assess the effectiveness of Neem Leaf (Azadirachta indica) ethanolic extract against golden apple snails. Specifically, this investigation will seek answers from the following question: * Is there a significant difference

The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge is a protected park in New Mexico located in the Chihuahuan desert around 20 miles north of Socorro, New Mexico. The Rio Salado flows through the refuge and is a tributary of the Rio Grande joining the Rio Grande just 15 miles north of Socorro, New Mexico. The refuge area currently hosts the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program by the University of New Mexico. While research into parasites in mammals mainly rodents (Wilson et al., 1997) and other species that habituate in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge has been done, there has not been any studies on snails and digenean parasites in the region. Understanding and mapping the physid snail and digenean parasite habitat could help…

The wildlife contained within the Everglades is very dependent on the cycling of this slow moving water. One example of this dependence is the feeding relationship between the snail kite and the apple snail. The snail kite is an endangered bird and the apple snail is a freshwater mollusk the size of a golf ball (Talley, 2003). The apple snails reproduce during the rainy season. The snails will lay thousands of tiny eggs on the stalks of marsh grasses when the water levels are at their highest. As the water recedes, the snail kites fly over the Everglades looking for them. Once the snail kite finds them, they swoop down and use their specialized beaks to extract the snails from their shells. The water cycle and the lives of apple snails and snail kites are intertwined. Snail kites depend on the successful reproduction of apple snails, which in turn is affected by the amount of rainfall. Recently scientists have been able to closely observe this relationship. When humans drained large areas of the Everglades and converted them into agricultural lands, the population of apple snails decreased sharply. This had a dramatic effect on the snail kite population. In 2003, only 1600 snail kites remained in Florida, the bird 's only U.S. habitat (Talley, 2003). The relationship among humans, snail kites, and apple snails illustrates the…

Snails are tiny slimy creatures. Mainly recognized by their characteristic shells, weirdly strange ability to stick to anything, and their odd questionable ooze that they leave behind. There are many different types of snails ranging from tiny too large. The smallest snail is called Daphniola eptalophas. The largest snail species is called the Giant African Land Snail (ALGALS). The most know relative of the snail family is the slug.…

To help this problem, I.A.R.F’s Environmental Cyber Crimes Unit filed a complaint to EBay about selling the shells of the Manus Green Tree Snail. I would suggest that they have a protective system of the snails and there habitat so that their habitat can get destroyed. Also I would suggest that no company are allow to sell the shell of the Manus Green Tree Snail. I.A.R.F’s Environmental Cyber Crimes Unit would benefit from my suggestion because, they protect animals and my thoughts could really help them get some ideas for protecting the Manus Green Tree Snail. The fact that he shells of the snails is very popular could be a big problem. The reason why this could be a big problem is because the companies that sell the shell wouldn’t really like the idea of not selling the shells because they…

The golden mussel threaten one of the world's unique environmental systems. Up to now, it has reached the waters of five nations in South America. The golden mussel is a tiny animal that it does not grow more than 1 inch, and it releases tiny larvae that drift with the current to new areas. The golden mussels frequently stick to hard surfaces such as rocks, manufactured structures. The Golden mussels have already effected South America negatively, and it harmed innate clam species. In Brazil and Argentina, the Larvae and little mussels went into hydroelectric and water treatment plants, in addition, they are blocking channels, so the officials are forced to spend a lot of money to remove the mussels per year, and sometimes they kill the mussels…

Snails breakdown decaying plants for nutrients, then microorganisms consume that waste and effect the soil’s health which effects plants which help consume carbon dioxide. Midwest Pleistocene Vertigo can easily be saved, by less human contact, grazing should be decreased because decaying leaves is their habitat and food. Snails maybe 2.1 millimeters, yet the result of higher populations will be less carbon dioxide resulting in safer…

Farmers, even before has so many issues in their farm and the most common problems of farmers in their farm lots are kuhols, specifically the Golden Apple Snail, which pests their plants. Golden apple snail The Golden Apple Snail is amphibious. While there is a sufficient level of dissolved oxygen in the water, they will hardly leave the water and will breathe by their gills. If the level of dissolved oxygen gets to low, the snails will go up to the surface and breathe with their lung (mostly by using its siphon, a tube that it extracts to the water surface). While filling their lung with air, the snails extract and contract their body, so that the pressure differences cause their lung to deplete and refill. These snails have the ability to cruse away from the aquarium, so a cover glass is a necessity, as they won't survive longer than a couple of days in dry conditions. These snails have a tendency to float around the water surface, "playing dead"- but actually, they are not. The best way to tell these snails are dead is if it doesn't contract when you touch it or if the operculum (shell cover) is missing (mostly at that time, the shell will also be empty). Due to their liking of plant matter as food, most people recommend not to keep them implanted on aquariums. Farmers of crops like “palay” who suffer from the activities of these Golden apple Snails are very unfortunate for having these pests in their farm because it was the perfect pest which can eventually damage your plant in a short period of time. Farmers’ goals when treating this problem about golden apple snail is controlling the mortality rate of the said snails not through…
