The role of women in society is continuously questioned and for centuries women have struggled to find their place in a world that is predominantly male oriented. Throughout history, society has stereotyped women, making it simply impossible for them to accomplish their goals and desires in life. The role of women in society was contributed by religious beliefs and the constant negative attitude that man has given women. They were made to feel like they had no duties in the community, and no voice in their own fate. It was not until 1920 when the nineteenth Amendment was ratified, which gave women the right to vote. Since then they have finally been able to express their opinion and it actually count for something in society. Women have also tried to enter fields which have usually been reserved for men, especially in the governments and armed forces. However all their efforts, in general, have not brought a change in this male dominant society. The reason being is that the presence of women in governments and armed forces does not promote gender equality and international peace, because women are still not given the authority and importance required to make any material difference in society.
It is difficult to understand this argument because by the time Industrial Revolution came along in 19th century, women were gaining more and more rights and acceptance into everyday life. Also, throughout the 20th century, many women began serving professional jobs such as doctors, lawyers, politicians, and even joining the military. However, none of these changes actually brought inequality between men and women to an end. As the author Martin van Creveld argues in his article, Men, Women and War, “The faster they run, the more they remain in place; very often it is a question not so much of women liberating themselves by overcoming the resistance of men as taking on jobs that men no longer want.” (Creveld, Page 11).
