1) TO STUDY THE VARIATION OF RESISTANCE WITH THE NATURE OF MATERIAL

For this Nichrome and copper wires of same length (1m) and area of cross section(0.5mm) are taken. One of them (say nichrome) is connected in the circuit and the rheostat is adjusted to get a voltage(V) in the circuit. The corresponding ammeter reading(I) is noted and the ratio V/I=R is calculated. The procedure is repeated for different values of voltage with the same wire and in each case the ratio V/I is calculated and the mean value of R is found. Similarly the resistances of other materials are calculated.

2) TO STUDY THE VARIATION OF RESISTANCE WITH LENGTH OF THE CONDUCTOR

To study the effect of length of wire on resistance of the material , nichrome wires of different lengths (0.5m,1m,1.5m) but the same area of cross section are taken and are connected in the circuit one by one. The circuit is closed and rheostat is adjusted to get a voltmeter reading(V) and the corresponding ammeter reading(I).The procedure is repeated and the mean value of R is found for each length of wire.

3) TO STUDY THE VARIATION OF RESISTANCE WITH THE AREA OF CROSS SECTION OF THE CONDUCTOR To study the effect of area of cross section of the wire on wire on resistance of the material, copper or Nichrome wires of different areas of cross section are taken and are connected in the circuit one by one. The circuit is closed and rheostat is adjusted to get a voltmeter reading (V) and the corresponding ammeter reading (I). The procedure is repeated and the mean value of R is found for each area of cross section of the wire.

I have decided to do a preliminary investigation. This preliminary will help plan my main experiment. I will choose 3 lengths, 10cm, 50cm and 100cm. These lengths are reliable as they don't jump lengths too much. One small, medium and large length. Here I will use a simple circuit and study the results, to see they are reliable. This investigation will mainly show the accuracy and how reliable my main investigation is, changing anything that is unreliable and needs corrected. I have learned that it is important to use a multimeter because it shows an accurate digital reading of the resistance and I don't have to work out the resistance manually which can give me a fairer test due to possible mistakes with calculations. It will also cut down the amount of components in the experiment which will make the experiment more reliable as less resistance will be caused from the components rather than the wire. It is also very important to keep the most important variable, current the same throughout the whole investigation. The heat in the wire from the current can cause the wire to affect my results as the ions gain kinetic energy causing them to have a higher collision rate. The multimeter should be a solution to this, as it uses a very small current thus not affecting the temperature in the circuit. The advantage of using the same apparatus consistently is that I will avoid having differences in the results by way of inaccuracies in the measuring equipment, resistance…

In this investigation, I will set up a simple circuit to be able to read the voltage and current when the length of wire changes, so I then can work out the resistance. I will be using constantan wire starting of with 1m length and then decreasing it by 0.10m intervals down to 0.20m long. I will not go above 1m or below 0.20m because it may be too long that they resist so much current that the wire burns, or the length of the wire is so small that it doesn't resist any current at all. The length of the wire will be changed by moving the crocodile clip across the wire on a ruler. The independent variable will be the length of the wire because that is what I will be changing. The dependant variable will be the resistance because it will change only due to the length of wire.…

I also think that the length of the wire and the resistance may be proportional and that if the length of the wire doubles, the resistance will also double. This is because if the wire was twice as long it would have twice as many atoms for the electrons to collide with making it twice as hard for the current to flow.…

Title: Investigating the current - potential difference relationship for a metal wire. Aim: To design an experiment that will facilitate an I - V Graph to be ascertained of a metal wire and thus find the resistance of the wire by deriving the inverse of the gradient of the graph. Skill: Planning & Designing Theory: Resistance is a property of any object or substance to resist or oppose the flow of an electrical current. The quantity of resistance in an electric circuit determines the amount of current flowing in the circuit for any given voltage applied to the circuit. This is according to Ohm's law. The unit of resistance is the Ohm which has the Greek letter 'Omega (Ω)'. By default, that is, for electrical calculations, the inverse of Resistance is obtained and this is known as conductance. If conductance is calculated by dividing current by potential difference then from the preceding phrase it can be deduced that, Resistance is calculated by ascertaining the inverse of conductance. The reasons for this will be provided within the Discussion/ Conclusion section. The resistance of an object is determined by the nature of the substance of which it is composed and this is known as the resistivity which are the dimensions of the object and the temperature. Resistance, however, is expressed in terms of the Ohm resistance per cubic centimeter at 20 oC (293 K). In its simplicity, before resistance is calculated, conductance is first obtained. Therefore: Current Conductance = Potential Difference Pooran (Rocky) Appadu Theory: Current -1 Resistance = Potential Difference Hypothesis: With reference to Ohm's law, by varying the potential difference (using the rheostat), the current will increase linearly for the metal wire thus allowing an I - V graph to be ascertained. By deriving the gradient of the graph, the conductance of the wire will be obtained and finding the inverse of conductance, the resistance of the wire will be ascertained. Apparatus: 1. Voltmeter 2. Ammeter…
