1. List five elements commonly present in organic compounds.
Carbon (C)
Hydrogen (H)
Oxygen (O)
Nitrogen (N)
Sulfur (S)

2. What are the common sources of organic compounds?

Vegetable and animal sources including bacteria and viruses contain organic compounds. Petroleum (crude oil), and coal are also sources of organic compounds.

3. What is observed when you blow your breath through limewater?

A couple of breaths through limewater, it becomes hazy. After a couple more breaths, the limewater becomes cloudy then becomes cloudy white as milk. Our breath contains carbon dioxide, and when it reacts with the limewater which contains Ca(OH)2 calcium hydroxide, it produces a new substance, CaCO3 calcium carbonate.

4. Write the equation(s) for the reaction that occur when the breath is blown through limewater.
CO2(g) + Ca(OH)2(aq) CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)
5. Complete and balance the following (assume that complete oxidation occurs).

a. CH4 +2O2 CO2 +2H2O
b. C3H8 + 5O2 3CO2 +4H2O
c. 2CH3OH + 3O2 2CO2 + 4H2O

6. What is the basis of the cleaning process in self-cleaning ovens?

It basically burns everything in your oven into ash. You can then just wipe it up easily with a damp cloth (after it cools of course).

7. Urine contains appreciable quantities of urea but almost no ammonia. Upon standing, urine specimens develop the odor of ammonia. Explain why this odor develops.

The odor develops because of the bacteria present. The bacteria usually increase the pH as they break down urea to ammonia. Another factor involved is high acid levels. Ammonia release can occur when the body is too acidic. Ammonia smell is from the body excreting large quantities of ammonia, a very alkaline substance, to try to maintain a proper pH balance.
